» all that heat...
The XFX card will probably have a short lifespan and/or artifacting with all that heat it gives off packed into such a tiny space. passively-cooled high-end GPUs are rare because they give off a TON of heat which requires extra active cooling (fans) in the case, which defeats the only real purpose of a passively-cooled high-end GPU (quietness). So generally the only GPUs worth getting passive/silent are lower-end models that don't give off so much heat. =\

Alan, the effort is what matters. Anyone can redicule with hindsight not many have the vision to attempt that build.

Jeebus, this article was a complete waste of time. Really, is it that hard to build a PC when the object of money is taken out, other than your own lack of planning to get the thing assembled and working?

$350 Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
$125 Gigabyte GA-965GM-S2
$60 Zalman CNPS-9500 AT
$16 Arctic Silver 5 – 3.5g/Zalman ZM-STG1 Thermal Compound
$800 2x Corsair DOMINATOR TWINX2048-8500C5D
$100 Silverstone Temjin SST-TJ08
$180 Corsair HX620W Power Supply
$700 Sony BWU-100A
$320 XFX GeForce 7950GT
$1300 Dell Ultrasharp 3007WFP
$1600 4x Seagate Barracuda 7200.10, 750GB
$0 Windows Vista Release Candidate 2

Thats $5551, then you have to add the HDTV Tuner and to be relistic a $400 Ultimate Vista. That brings the total to over $6000, so why not go for a $999 Quad Core CPU instead of E6600?

In theory, if the motherboard had overclocking abililty, the E6600 would (likely) give us an equally fast ultimate clockspeed.

The other issue was thermal management -- the 4 7200rpm drives and passively cooled 7950GT produce a ton of heat.

This paragraph left me puzzled:

"Historically, micro ATX platforms have been shunned by enthusiasts. If you wanted upgradeability, you'd go with a standard ATX motherboard. If you wanted portability, you'd go with the even smaller SFF."

The writer set it up as if a point was coming, but it was just abandonned. After reading the article, and the extended hurdles of dealing with the micro-atx format, I'm left with the conclusion that micro-atx is completely useless.

If you guys couldn't beat systems you made a tech cycle ago, I would have had to question this entire sites credibility. :)

Also, the passive cooling on a 7950GT makes me a little scared... :O
