» Sony Denies Limiting PS3 Launch Shipments To Top 5 Retailers

Biz.GameDaily is reporting that Sony is denying that it is limiting the launch shipments of its Playstation 3 console to the top 5 game retailers. The initial story mentioned a statement on the web site of small game retailer Rhino Video Games which said, "...due to industry-wide extreme hardware allocations imposed by Sony, Rhino will not be receiving any PS3 systems on launch day, November 17th." An internal memo stated that Sony had designated only the top 5 retailers to receive the console on the launch date (which we speculate to be EBGames/Gamestop, Wal-Mart, BestBuy, Circuit City and Target). However, Sony responded to the article saying, "There is absolutely no truth to the report that Sony is limiting launch allocations to a select number of retailers. Every single authorized SCEA customer is receiving product at launch."

"The analysis reckons that the combined material and manufacturing cost for the 20GB version is $805.85 and $840.35 for the 60GB version/ That means Sony makes a big loss on each PS3 it sells.

The Xbox 360 has a BOM (bill of materials) of $323.30. "The size of Sony's loss per unit is remarkable, even for the video game console business," said iSuppli."

Stop posting stuff Yoshi you are extremely aggravating. We get that you love when Mario and Luigi ride you. The ps3 IS a good deal but buy a HDTV before you buy a ps3

I really hate when people think we owe sony because they are losing money on every ps3 sold. Heres a clue - You don't owe sony anything (unless your a sonyfanbot that is). It was there choice to lose money on the ps3, its their choice to include blu ray and cell into ps3 (if it is a success they will benefit enormously from it). Everything was all a decision/gamble they made and if it doesn't pay off to f**kin bad. I have no sympathy for them, they new the score - they made the bed so to speak now they can lie in it.

If you find it a deal then good for you but don't make it seem like sony is doing its customers any favours because there not.

How much do you want them to sell it to you for, $300 so they can lose $500? It is already designed and manufacturing and has every feature that hardcore gamers would want.
Can load Linux
USB keyboard and mouse
HD output

KEYBOARD and MOUSE! isn't that way better than playing halo3 on a xbox pad?

Or perhaps go to CompUSA and get both at the same time...

Listen, the PS3 may be costing Sony more per unit than the 360 is costing M$, but that hardly makes it a "good deal".

My local CompUSA is supposedly only selling PS3's at launch IF you buy it bundled with a 42" HDTV.

I really hope that's not true.

Oh, wow, it is true, check the attached link. It shows an online version of their paper add. On the first page in the lower right corner it reads:

"Reserve your PlayStation 3 on Friday, November 17th when you buy any Sony HDTV 40" or larger."

Wow, just... wow.
