» Problems With PS3 Resolutions On Older HDTVs

IGN is reporting that people who have gotten early retail units of Sony's Playstation 3 console are finding out that older HDTVs may have problems with video resolutions in games. Here is a snip:

As it turns out, gamers who own older HD sets that feature only 480i, 480p, and 1080i resolution input capabilities will have to settle for the display quality being downsized as the game boots in its 480p mode rather than upscaling the image from its more desirable 720p mode to the TV's 1080i. We tested this development on older HDTV sets with games designed for 720p but not 1080i -- Resistance: Fall of Man, NHL 2K7, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07, and Need for Speed Carbon. Sure enough, the system downshifted all four titles to 480p rather than moving up to 1080i.

How much more punishment can the PS3 take? Is this the final blow yet?

The way I see it for those true gamers out there.. $600 is much better spent on a 8800 GTX Video Card with a 24 inch widescreen at 1920 x 1200 and Hi End PC,Direct X10,Vista and Crysis coming..Come on people thats where the true visuals will be!

This is a total, major, huge FuttBucker for anyone who owns a CRT set, a CRT rear projector, or even people with big-money CRT Front Projectors still setup in their homes.

I've got a 720p projector, but do all my gaming on a 65" RPTV thats CRT based and has no internal scaler. This will render literally tens of thousands (if not more) of HDTV sets useless with the PS3 if the set is older than, say, 2003...when scalers began to be included.

Its the same thing people complained about when XBOX was out..the Xbox didn't have a scaler, so games that were made to run optionally at 720p couldn't be scaled to 1080i because most CRT sets at the time (or earlier) had no internal scaler.

Sony couldn't try to make this launch any worse. No great BD selection, no great launch game selection, a system that limits its use to modern HDTV sets and doesnt TELL THE POTENTIAL BUYERS that it might not WORK if their set is older than a few years and is CRT based....no "great" games due out before Jan/Feb...

Oh and its $600 bucks and hard to find.
Unreal...absolutely unreal.

Exactly. I too have an older HDTV that only has 480p, 720i, and 1080i. Wow, I cannot believe that Sony is this short sighted.

Even with the junk games that came with my 360 I could look at the picture quality and see where my money went... but this?

The beginning of next generation gaming indeed...

Oh well, now I don't need to worry about buying a PS3 that I cannot afford and couldn't find at a store anyway.

Well, that settles that for me. My Mitsu HDTV accepts 1080i but not 720p, and Resistance was the PS3 game I was most looking forward to.

Graphics aren't everything, but when you're talking about spending $660 they aren't nothing either.

Well that has to suck for people with older HDTVs.

Did Sony not test any of this to ensure people would have the best possible playing experience? Or did they figure everyone can afford a new set, especially after buying a PS3?
