| the R580+ gpu in the x1950xtx/cf cards is the same 90nm process as the R580 in x1900 based cards. the only difference is that R580 is designed for GDDR3 and R580+ is designed with
GDDR4 in mind. Also, I know the story is almost a year old now, but the story covering the launches of the 7600gt and the x1800gto has an error in the specification chart for the x1800gto. I don't know if it is edited by hand or something where one fills in specs and bandwidth/fillrates are calculated automatically, but the chart lists the x1800gto as having a pixel fillrate of 4000Mpixels/sec and a texel fill of the same. However, this is incorrect. Since the x1800gto has 12 texture units and rops in addition to 12 pixel shaders at a core clock of 500mhz, its pixel fill and texel fill should be 6000Mpixels/sec.» Login to reply to this |

| | Actually I think it is a fairly decent article. The only one of the top 5 that shouldn't be there is the DEll 30 inch monitor. I mean you can't just give it to the dell because it is cheaper than the others. I would have given number 4 spot to the samsung perpendicular drives. They really are a top class bit of hardware :-) » Login to reply to this |

| | This list is a joke. The Wii was the hottest selling Christmas item. It is the only item on the list a non nerd would have any idea what it was. The title of the article should be Top 5 Hardware products for hardcore nerds. Obviously the mass market has a much different opinions that firingsquad's nerd centric view. » Login to reply to this GX-Brandon (369) Jan 05, 2007 - 09:34 am
| We've explained at length our opinion on the Wii. It's great at what it is, but also remember that we're talking about the very top hardware products, and fundamentally hardware-wise the Wii is just a souped-up Gamecube with a new controller. Nintendo could've just as easily sold it as an accessory to the Gamecube, but they wisely chose to sell it as a new product.
Why else do you think they've been so vague on the hardware specs...» Login to reply to this Ricky Williams (134) Jan 17, 2007 - 11:16 pm
| | I think our difference is in how we are defining what top hardware is. You could define it as most technically impressive, or you could define it by popularity and impact on society. I think you guys picked by most technically impressive, which is fine. It just probably isn't how I would define top hardware. Thanks for the response and sorry for being rude in the my previous post. » Login to reply to this |

| I don't get your thinking behind the 'vague' comment. Why would Nintendo talk about hardware, they haven't since the Nintendo 64.
Who cares that it's the ATi Hollywood slapped with an IBM core running at X mhz? What benifit is the X360 or PS3 specs if they overheat and crash? Specs should never be a consideration for console players, they are interests to us for curiosity sake, but it's not the principle role of the console to be better in specs, and Nintendo knows that more than anyone. Don't get me wrong I like the Wii, and will get one once the furor dies down, but I'm realistic about it.
However you mention this being about very top hardware products, which of course the Wii is not, and really the GF7600 by definition of mid-range isn't either. For top end hardware the PS3 would win on spec and the introduction of a cheap BD player with PSP style web browser, etc. See this to me shows the schyzo nature of the list.» Login to reply to this |
