» Valve Head Man: "The PS3 Is A Total Disaster"

Quoting an interview from the recent Game Informer magazine, Computer and Video Games is reporting that Valve's head man Gabe Newell has some harsh words for Sony's Playstation 3 console, saying "The PS3 is a total disaster on so many levels, I think It's really clear that Sony lost track of what customers and what developers wanted." He added that Sony should "just cancel it and do a do over. Just say, 'This was a horrible disaster and we're sorry and we're going to stop selling this and stop trying to convince people to develop for it'". However, Newell praises Nintendo's Wii console saying he feels that the Wii will have a larger install base next Christmas than Microsoft's Xbox 360 console.

Wii is really coming on strong, I'm impressed. Would be nice if I could see one and demo it somewhere...

The Wii is already the market winner of the console war. Sure the Xbox 360 might have sold more units but Microsoft lost money off each one while Nintendo made money. In fact the Wii is the fastest selling peice of hardware ever. The only downside to the Wii is lack of real great games other than Zelda and a control system that lends itself to making gimick games. Given a year or two the Wii will be a great system with tons of developer intrest and the problem will be solved. Hopefully this happens before gamers put down the contoller.

The Xbox 360 is off to a great start and really is the PS3 killer. Without the Xbox 360 the PS3 would look a lot better but right now they are equal systems with equal abilities. I really can't think of a reason to buy a PS3.

Good post here, you're more optimistic about the wii than I am but good post none the less.

There's only one part of your post i want to address.. you say "Without the Xbox 360 the PS3 would look a lot better but right now they are equal systems with equal abilities."

If you're talking games.. then yes, theyre pretty much equal..however, as far as other abilities.. the 360 is far far far far far ahead.

Actually Oblivion is more like a 10-hours games, at that point you realize the world scaling: nothing is going to get harder or easier.
All the loot is scaled to your level too so there won't ever be any treasure worth getting, and you can kick that Vampire Patriarch's butt at any level you are, because he will always have the same level as you anyway.
Yes, you can win Oblivion at Level 1, and it's not hard at all because even the toughest enemies are going to be Level 1 or 2...

On X360 you can't. And on the PC, I was burnt out of Oblivion before any of the major mods reached maturity...

» Those are harsh words, but...
I was watching a special on MSNBC about the history of videogames. Most of the special is about the old days of Atari, Nintendo and Sega. Towards the end, the piece starts talking about how smart Sony was in their marketing model for the original ps(1). The point here was that Sony delivered a great product and undercut the competition in terms of price. The commentator mentioned that Sony realized that you give away the razor to sell razor blades. The analogy, if you don't get it, is that you sell the console at a low price to ensure that the consumer buys lots of games that will only work on your system, therefore ensuring that you earn huge royalty payments for the console's lifecycle. I found this fascinating because if you buy into this theory, Sony has totally failed this time around. They have forgotten what got them to their huge position in the market. They are no longer giving away the razor - in fact, they have the most expensive razor on the market. I am not trying to flame - I think the 360 is too expensive too (although i did buy one).

Don't worry, you're not flaming, you're pointing out a fact.

I remember Sony being so proud that they had the deep pockets that would allow them to sell those units at a loss in order to capture market share.

I also think that they've loss sight of that basic premise and have become intoxicated with the technology.
