| | (Post a comment) » Original World Of Warcraft Being Abandoned By Players? This News.com story reports that while Blizzard has generated tons of sales for its MMORPG expansion pack World of Warcraft: Burning Crusade, the original game is being abandoned by WoW players as they move into the content of the expansion pack. Here is a snip:
For Kelly Wallace, an Atlanta attorney who had been playing with four level-60 characters in the original game, BC is an entirely new experience.
"In my opinion, it's really made WoW a very different game for those folks who had been playing at level 60," Wallace said. "It is as if a big reset button was pressed."
Wallace said she has had little trouble transitioning to BC, but notes, like Glerum, that the expansion has basically rendered the original game moot.
"This is now the game of Warcraft," she said. "There is absolutely zero reason for players to ever go back to (the original game) because the rewards available in (BC) are better and, for the most part, easier to obtain."
But she noted that central locations from the original game, like Ironforge, an important city, are now nearly empty. | Previous news article | Back to main news | Next news article |

| That's mostly a lot of bullsh*t.
In WoW, you can't play just one character - you can have up to 10 per server, per account. Because leveling up is relatively fast (for an MMO), most players have a bunch of characters, so there are always level 1-60 characters in the game world.
The old world is still the only place where one can level from 1 to 60, so there are and always will be players around in the low and mid level areas. The new continent, Outland, is only for level 60+ characters, so it's not making the old world obsolete for new characters.
The only thing that's kinda obsolete now are the old level 60 dungeons and bosses, of which after release of the original WoW quite a bunch of those were made, resulting in quite a lot of this kind of content. Scholomance, Stratholme, Dire Maul, Blackrock Spire, Onyxia, Zul'Gurub, Molten Core, Blackwing Lair, Ahn'Qiraj, Naxxramas, and the outdoor bosses: they're, indeed, all kinda pointless now.
But I understand why Blizzard articifially bumped up the item quality of stuff in Outland. It's so that new characters, who didn't get all the ultra-powerful epic loots from those mentioned level 60 areas, an equal footing with oldschool level 60 characters. It allows them to catch up without needing to do the old raids. 40-man raid guilds don't exist anymore, since the new end-game raid dungeons in WoW are now capped at 20 players, so one can't force characters to progress through those places.» Login to reply to this Anonymous (-) Feb 02, 2007 - 11:14 pm
| | Yeah, basically BC helps the casual player and the player that has a life but plays WoW for entertainment or stress relief. So that person doesn't have to find 40 people or a guild with over 40 people, and constantly grind through dungeons to get what he wants. » Login to reply to this |
