» S.T.A.L.K.E.R. performance enhancements/SLI coming for GeForce 8 users

We've learned that NVIDIA is hard at work on developing a new ForceWare driver for GeForce 8800 users that will bring performance enhancements as well as SLI support for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. One thing we've already noticed in our S.T.A.L.K.E.R. testing is that the GeForce 8800 GTX doesn't perform that much faster than the GeForce 8800 GTS 320MB with today's 97.92 driver, so hopefully the upcoming driver will really allow the GeForce 8800 GTX to flex its muscles. The new driver will hopefully be available sometime next week, we're keeping our fingers crossed.

This brings us to our next question: with this in mind, we were going to get started on our S.T.A.L.K.E.R. CPU performance article, but obviously with the GeForce 8800 GTX barely scaling over the GTS board we were wondering which GPU we should go with, and figured we'd ask the readers to see what you would like to see. Would you rather we use the Radeon X1950 XTX, or perhaps a pair of 7900 GTX cards running in SLI? Another option would be for us to just wait for the upcoming NVIDIA driver, and test the various CPUs with the GeForce 8800 GTX at that point. Please share your thoughts in the news comments...

"No body seems to mention what operating system they are using anymore when talking about game performance. This is asinine. It is fact that STALKER runs crappy in Vista so just say it. Those of us with the high end machines sticking with XP have a 95% success and enjoyment rate from our gameplay. I dont care what anyone says, real gamers know ###### well there is a handful of games that can run for maybe 15 minutes before crasing in Vista. This whole thing has become a Farce. A Charade."

I have to agree with this 100%
I definately want to know what OS is being used as this makes a freaking fuge difference

Operating System = winxp x64 / vista x64
Platform Drivers = 6.86 / 15.00
Video Drivers = 97.92 / 100.65
Direct X = directx_feb2007_redist.exe
Mother Board = Asus A8N32-SLI-Deluxe (Latest Bios)
Processor = AMD x2 4200 @2600MHz
Hard Drives = (4) WD 250s SATA Raid0 Config
Sound Card = Onboard Sound
Video Card = BFG 8800 GTX
Mounse = MS 3button optical
Display = Samsung SyncMaster 215tw (1680*1050@60hz) Native
Keyboard = MS Cheapo
Memory = (2) 1 gigers PC3200 PNY i think

» I am convinced everyone thinks Vista is being used
Ok I have 2 8800GTX in SLI and this game runs with out a glitch. Flawless BUT its in XP pro. No body seems to mention what operating system they are using anymore when talking about game performance. This is asinine. It is fact that STALKER runs crappy in Vista so just say it. Those of us with the high end machines sticking with XP have a 95% success and enjoyment rate from our gameplay. I dont care what anyone says, real gamers know damn well there is a handful of games that can run for maybe 15 minutes before crasing in Vista. This whole thing has become a Farce. A Charade. STALKER was in development for years. Of course it wasnt designed to run in Vista. The thing is is that Vista wasnt designed to run a Direct X 9 game. This is not like the XP days with Dos games. That type of backwards compatibility.

STALKER already runs great with SLI 8800 GTXs if you use XP.

"I am convinced everyone thinks V.ista is being used" - why?
I'm not sure if your comment is in reference to a specific article but page 6 of Brandon's "Mainstream cards" review lists XP Pro SP2 as the OS being used. While some of your points against V.ista as a gaming OS might be a bit overly critical I think you're right about most "real gamers" avoiding V.ista until at least SP1. So do we really need to start every game/performance review with "V.ista is a pos"?

Edit: "V.ista" Ha! Take that ContentLink! Damned if I'm going to contribute to the advertising of this.

If you have Vista and an 8800 series videocard, forget about playing STALKER. We have to wait for this Nvidia Driver update. There are massive issues with the card and vista (THQ FAQ Confirms this).

I tried playing it on my rig (E6600@2.9ghz/XFX 8800GTS) and got a solid 7-12fps as soon as I walk outside.
And a lil Surprised FS didn't test it out with Vista and their 8800 card.

Test some 7300GT. It would be nice to see more low end cards. Gaming on a budget.

They further stated that everyone who does not own a 8800 card should buy one to play their 6 year old game with dynamic lighting.
