» Intel benchmarks Penryn

Today Intel's disclosing more info on their upcoming 45-nm parts, including performance results for Penryn. At IDF China Intel benchmarked both quad-core and dual-core Penryn processors (codenamed Yorkfield and Wolfdale respectively) against today's Core 2 Extreme QX6800:

Intel Penryn Performance Results source: Intel
CPUDual-core Penryn @3.33GHz 6MB Cache 1333MHz FSBQuad-core Penryn @3.33GHz 12MB Cache 1333MHz FSBCore 2 Extreme QX6800 @2.93GHz 8MB Cache 1066MHz FSB
3DMark 06 CPU Score306149574070
3DMark 06 Overall110151196311123
Mainconcept H.264 encoder (seconds)1197389
Cinebench 9.5113419351549
Cinebench R10 Beta70451306810416
Half-Life 2 Lost Coast Build 2707210210153
DivX 6.6 Alpha with VirtualDub 1.7.1 (seconds)221838
Based on these benchmarks, the biggest improvements were seen in apps like DivX, where SSE4 allowed the Yorkfield CPU to outperform Core 2 Extreme QX6800 by 53%. H.264 video encoding ran 18% faster on Penryn as well.

When it comes to gaming, the architectural improvements and clock speed boost allowed the Penryn CPUs to outperform the Core 2 Extreme by 37%, although unfortunately the build of HL2 Intel used for testing didn't take advantage of quad-core processing. 3DMark 06 showed a nice gain for Penryn however.

Keep in mind that these benchmarks come directly from Intel, and haven't been verified by an independent source, but things are certainly looking good for Penryn so far. Expect the first Penryn CPUs to be released at the end of this year.

The longer I hold off on my next system purchase, the more interesting things are looking. I've got three grand burning a hole in my pocket right now and I'm finding it increasingly hard not to upgrade my aging P4 3.0 GHz setup with all those lovely quad-core CPUs beckoning to me... :)

AMD had better pull something out of their ass soon if they want a chance to get any part of my cash.

FX-76 anyone? They really have to fine tune their 4x4 setup, idk how many people are using it but it just doesn't appeal to me at all. I would much rather shell out the money for a QX67oo or QX6800 and have that much of a better system for that much longer. Crysis is gonna be what makes me snap and go into debt to build my DX10 comp. Just sucks I have to buy Vista, but I'm sure SP1 will be out by then (hell probably SP2 or maybe even the next OS from MS will be out by then)

Anyone got any prices for this stuff? I like the look of the quad-core Penryn but if its gonna cost me my freakin tower then hell with it. The dual core one still looks pretty darn good though... O_O sucks to be AMD right now.

Interesting data, if we can trust them. 13.7% increase in CPU clock speed, 25% increase in FSB clock speed.

As for the programs on the Quad-core Penryn:
3DMark 06 CPU Score 21.8%
3DMark 06 Overall 7.6%
Mainconcept H.264 encoder 18.0% decrease in time but 21.9% faster
Cinebench 9.5 24.9%
Cinebench R10 Beta 25.5%
Half-Life 2 Lost Coast Build 2707 37.3%
DivX 6.6 Alpha with VirtualDub 1.7.1 52.6% decrease in time but 111.1% faster

The little increase in the 3DMark 06 Overall score must mean that GPU performance is the limiting factor. And I must say it's rather unbelievable performance increase with the VirtualDub.

EDIT: You might want to fix your percentages, the time running the Mainconcept H.264 encoder was reduced by 18.0%, but for that to happen the Yorkfield CPU had to run it 21.9% faster. Same error is made with the VirtualDub test. I know it's nitpicking but percentages really have a thing for bothering me.

The HL2 result is a little shocking to me. A 37% improvement in framerate from a 14% imrpovement in clockrate from the CPU? There must be a lot of benefits from the bus speed increase.

It is amusing to see big Intel using gaming benchmarks. Am rather surprised they didn't use Supreme Commander tho. You'd think they'd want to trumpet the parallel processing more.

You forgot about the larger cache. The new ones have 12MB, and the QX6800 has "only" 8MB. Anandtech had some HL2 benchmarks some time which showed that larger CPU caches are quite beneficial for the Source engine.

As for Supreme Commander, quad cores do not perform a lot better than dual cores, unfortunately. I was hoping it would do better...

I plan on getting a E6400 pretty soon and just overclock it like a champ.

These processors will probably be in the higher dollar range and will require another board more than likely.

My guess is most C2D users are gonna be caught with either an 800/1000 FSB or just 1000 FSB board, not one that is 800/1000/1333. E6400 huh? Im sure you can squeeze 3.0+ ghz with custom cooling option out of that one.
