 Tiger Woods Out...Until August!

| | (Post a comment) » Removed: FSAA Comparison: V5500/ GF2If you're looking for our first FSAA comparison article, we've decided to yank it from the site. After a good deal of internal discussion today, we decided on this course of action because the protocols used in the first article were not the best possible way to base a comparison. As mentioned before, we're working on a new comparison test involving two identically configured machines, sitting side by side.
FSAA is a very complex topic, and it's certainly a feature that cannot be characterized, measured, or compared by any traditional means. Because of that, we're going to handle the new article with even more care and attention than anything we've ever done before. FiringSquad is committed to providing the highest quality content. We're not going to be satisfied with anything less than our best possible effort. | Previous news article | Back to main news | Next news article |

People should not be fooled by the Q3 benchmarks. Q3 uses T&L
but 99.9% of the games on the market do not. So you should see the
GTS win in that one. I've seen benchmarks of the V5 vs GTS at
other
games and the V5 wins. So don't be missled. Unless Q3 is all that
you play then the V5 is faster with and without FSAA. Unreal
Tornament
is a good example. The V5 is a clear winner in those benchmarks
and when Duke Nukem Forever comes out (which uses the unreal
engine), people will be forgetting about Q3 which will be almost a
year old. NFS5 is also faster on the V5, infact without a T&L
game the
V5 is faster and sometimes much faster then a GTS. Thats why I
hate
the Q3 benchmarks because its one of the only games with T&L
support
and there for very misleading. So compare the cards without T&L
not
with, it's not fare. Not for 3dfx but for us because T&L is a
feature
thats not supported.

OK 146, where did you hear about nvidia suing Elsa regarding their
GeForce2? I'd like to see proof of that. It looks like nvidia is
using the fact the Elsa has a shipping product as advertisement on
their website. Perhaps you believe whatever you read on any old
website just a tad too easily.
Same goes for FSAA quality. Just because some punks on some website
say that GeForce 4xFSAA is the same as V5 2xFSAA doesn't make it a
fact. That claim was originally made by 3dfx, and although it MIGHT
be true, nobody can call it a fact since it's a subjective call.
This is why we're all waiting for Firingsquad to give us a blind
test with nvidia and 3dfx's FSAA so we can get a controlled result.
I personally see nvidia's fsaa as being better than 3dfx's 2xFSAA,
but not quite as good as 3dfx's 4xFSAA. This is just after looking
at screenshots. As you say, real world gaming might give a
different impression. The side-by-side tests being conducted by
FiringSquad will give us expert opinions on the matter.
I hope that Firingsquad won't just limit the test to fsaa quality.
16-bit and 32-bit none-fsaa image quality is also good to compare
side-by-side in a controlled testing environment.

hehe. 146 again.
To all those who say that GTS is on the shelves, yes and no. Elsa
released their board before NVidia gave the ok and now there being
sued
for it. So if you buy this card, do it now but you won't get
drivers or
support untill Nvidia says so. you never no, mybe Elsa won't be
able to
sell the gts after this. Only time will tell.

Don't people read the reviews about FSAA. Almost all the reviews
say that its very hard to judge the difference of FSAA in still
shots.
Plus converting to jpg's drops the image quality but they almost
all
say that once you play with FSAA you won't go back. Most of
them also say the Nvidia use of FSAA, which by the way was also
in the 3dfx V2 drivers about 2 1/2 years ago, is maybe comparable
to V5's 2x not 4x. Why do so many people miss this, it's there to
be read.
And to answer messege 129:
However Geforce and Geforce2 cards will relieve the processor of
the
geometry work as well as drawings and animation so if you had a
system slower than a pentium3 450.
That only happens if games take advantage of it. And there really
isn't any. And out of the 100's of games being released every
year,
less then 7 half @&@ attemps at support doesn't impress me.
60fps is cool but if i can get a V5 to run at 1024x768 32bit FSAA
4x
that would be great. And all those nvidia fans who say 60 fps is
all
that matters, you were saying last year that 32 bit color and
video
quality is all that matters. The V5 gives you a choice. If you
want
60 fps, leave FSAA off. If you want the best video quality out
there,
turn FSAA 4x on. Options, thats what everyone asked for and thats
what 3dfx has given ya.
Also V5's FSAA works with all games now. GTS FSAA only works
with opengl and will never work good with D3D. "the new
dirivers will
make FSAA work on D3D" I hear people saying. NO IT WON'T.
What Nvidia has done is bring back a software hack that is years
old
which 3dfx and i thing matrox used to used but when you used

Why are people going crazy over 3dfx's FSAA. Who cares. I would
rather have more eye candy and some jaggies anyday over no jaggies
and bland scenery. That doesn't matter anyway because Nvidia also
has support for FSAA.
The Dagoth Moor demo looks awesome. I can't wait till games start
using that engine. While V5 people will be slowly chugging playing
Dagoth type games, I'll be smoothly cruising with my GeForce.

What are you an idiot? Just because a company introduces new
technology doesn't mean that it will be the best later on. Nvidia
brought us T&L and NSR. What has 3dfx brought us? FSAA and
motion blur? I really don't see motion blur increasing the eye
candy on games. As for FSAA Nvidia can do that as well although
only in a limited sense at the moment. Games are going to start
looking more like Dagoth Moor Zoological Gardens. Did 3dfx make
that happen? No, I think its Nvidia that I see on that demo. Let's
see how 3dfx will run on that demo. I could only laugh thinking
about it.
I don't understand why people are whining about how the current
GeForce cards are going to be outdated. GeForce cards are much more
future proof that V5 thanks to the T&L engine. So what if a new
card comes out faster. You should be grateful because that means
newer technology will be introduced and the older cards will be
cheaper. Just don't buy it if you don't want to spend the money.
I don't hate 3dfx in no way but Nvidia is the one that has
introduced new technology that can really improve the eye candy of
games.

Wow what a cat fight! I think that people should buy what suits them
best, I like GLIDE API games a lot they seem to look and run just
that little better. I think we should all remember that the V1 was
the start of all this... As gamers we owe a hell of a lot to 3DFX!
Thats why I bought a V1, then 2x V2's (12M) and my current V3
and guess what I WILL be buying a V5. But and this is the important
part... Not untill the card is a few months old and the price
drops...
If anyone should be $@#%%% with 3DFX it's me! I never recieved any
DVD
software, and that was a year ago. I think most people outside the
US dont get very good service from 3DFX.
Anyhow all from
