» Removed: FSAA Comparison: V5500/ GF2

If you're looking for our first FSAA comparison article, we've decided to yank it from the site. After a good deal of internal discussion today, we decided on this course of action because the protocols used in the first article were not the best possible way to base a comparison. As mentioned before, we're working on a new comparison test involving two identically configured machines, sitting side by side.

FSAA is a very complex topic, and it's certainly a feature that cannot be characterized, measured, or compared by any traditional means. Because of that, we're going to handle the new article with even more care and attention than anything we've ever done before. FiringSquad is committed to providing the highest quality content. We're not going to be satisfied with anything less than our best possible effort.

I have seen alot of false information said here. The Voodoo5
outperforms the geforce2 in speed by .1 gigapixels. The geforce2's
best is 1.6 gigapixels while the voodoo5's best is 1.7. That may
not seem much but that is still melinia above the dreamcast that
people seem to worship for its horrible graphics capabilities.
These 2 cards really cant be compared. The voodoo5 is the best
32-bit color, 128-bit graphics card and is going to be released in
less then 2 weeks. The geforce2 is a little slower but with 256-bit
graphics, that will be released in more then a year. As a game
developer i will definitaly get the voodoo5 seeing as GNU technology
is a huge waste of time, many people fail to realize that this
technology has been around since the commodore. I may get the
geforce2 but seeing as you cant even use the 256-bit in windows i
dont think it will be very soon. If i remember D3D 8.0 will have
very limited support for 256-bit cards. Which means that when the
geforce2 comes out the 256-bit will just then be used in games. I
have never been one to wait, especially seeing as i have to make
games to pay for my house...

I guess i will throw my 2 cents in on this one.

I use 3dfx cards and have always used them. I have owned a V1, V2,
And im using a V3 3500 (overclocked stable at 215mhz b.t.w.) I like
the fact that very #$$$ game works with it. BUT, I have taken
notice of the GF2. It does beat the V5 on FPS, it has T&L, it
has a basicly non working FSAA (maybe they will get it to work), and
its not so CPU dependant. The only problem I can really see with the
GF2 is that even though it gets 349867564598 FPS in Q3 at
48764569049870x239845739845694 resolutions with a pIII 650, my V3
3500 will get 60+ stable FPS on a celeron 450 at 1024x768. It looks
fine and plays perfect. The problem I see with the V5 is there
really isnt anything new besides FSAA (that works with basicly
everything).

Lets face it, the GF2 is probly a better card. If you dont play Q3
all day, then the V5 is probly more suited for you. But in the real
world most of the "old" cards (V3 or GF) would be more
than perfect for anyone with half a brain and less than the amount
of cash a "new" (not realy better I.M.O.) card will cost
you.

As for me, I will wait for the next generation cards, those will be
the cards to buy (they will have all the bugs worked out and they
should be a hell of a lot faster with FSAA enabled), But if i had to
get a new gen card, I would get whichever card was cheaper cuz
unlike some people, I dont play Q3 all day and both cards have more
than ebough juice for anything out there.

The GeForce 2 GTS is not crippled at all. It is faster than the
Voodoo 5 5500. Even though the Voodoo 5 6000 may be faster, I am
not interested in paying $599 for my video card, I would rather
spend the money elsewhere on my computer. Quake 3 also looks better
on a GeForce 2 GTS when not using FSAA than a Voodoo 5 does when it
is using FSAA and the GeForce 2 GTS gives more FPS. Real gamers
would rather have more FPS than using FSAA anyways. I believe that
FSAA will be a nice feature on future cards such as the NV20 or
3dfx's Rampage. I used to think 3dfx was the best, but, nVidia has
recently shown me otherwise. Everything from 3dfx after the Voodoo
2's has been a failure in my eyes.

GeForce 2 GTS beats the Voodoo 5 like a red headed step child.

I've seen both in action. It seems to "look" ok for games
in general, however, it also FSAA the desktop environment and really
looks bad. Looking at the desktop made me feel like I needed
glasses. Everything was blurry and out-of-focus.

The way both are attempting to AA the graphics is incorrect. They
are taking the edges of the image and are putting a blurred filter
on it. For smaller objects like text, it simply just blurs it beyond
readability. A lesson in vectored graphics like in Adobe Illustrator
needs to be reviewed perhaps? Where everything is always smooth no
matter what size it is increased or decreased to.

I think I read somewhere that the kind of antialiasing that the
Geforces use can only work with Directx7(or maybe 8) games. It will
be this way even with improved drivers. If this really is the case,
then I don't think it is a very useful feature. This is because
most Dx7 and dx8 games are newer, and therefor have higher graphics
card requirements, so it may not be fast enough. The kind of games
that FSAA would really shine with are older Dx5 and dx6 games.
These games have older system requirements so speed is not an issue,
and there are many older good games I have that could really use
some good FSAA. Some have said, "why get a voodoo!?" but
I think it's a really compelling argument to say that with a voodoo
you can have every single game, all the way back to old glide and
dx5 games, look much better. Not everyone needs the absolute
fastest card. Nvidia's FSAA seems more like a promise for the
future. Maybe it is better in quality than 3dfx's, but at least
3dfx's can be used.

So, in summary, if I had money, I'd buy the V5 because I don't mind
if it's a little slower because it can make all my games look good
now.

maybe I should jump in. Ok it IS a feature it just does not work
right now. In a week or two Nvidia will have out a new set of
drivers that correct this issue. I mean come ON its Nvidia the best
dang driver markers out there.

If FSAA doesn't work with all those games on the GTS, how can you
even call it a feature. This comparison is worthless until it works
with most direct 3D games. "See how great it looks, and oh, by
the way -- it doesn't work with the games you want to play. It only
works with quake type games, where you don't need it anyway."

*******
Right, nvidia is pulling some major BS claiming FSAA for their card
DUH! what the hell is wrong with them? can they never just be honest
to the consumers?

You are right that you shouldn't buy a crippled card, but it's the
GTS that's crippled, with all those games that won't work with it's
"FSAA".

I hope the FiringSquad doesn't aid them in this deception on the
consumer -- they shouldn't have FSAA printed on the box if it
doesn't work.

Ehh actually, Half-life: Counter-strike is the most popular online
shooter. Last I saw (on Shugashack.com) it was WAY ahead of Q3 and
UT. In fact, Q3 + UT combined were still behind CS.

Of course NFS, most flight sims, Sim games, etc are mostly single
player. It's kinda hard to say exactly what is the most popular
game. Units sold? Doesn't mean people actually PLAY the game...
Hmmm.

The GF2 drivers are probably still behind GF1 drivers. Just because
they come in the same .zip file doesn't mean they run the same lines
of code. Read Tomshardware.com's review of the GF2. The GF1 DDR
actually beats out the GF2 in low resolutions (like 105fps vs
115fps, but you get the point). And also remember drivers usually
don't help high resolution 32bit color scenes as much. So it is
doubtful 1024x768x32bit is going to get much better for either card.
FSAA modes could possibly get better, but I'll still bet only for
the lowest 640x480x16bit settings.
