 Tiger Woods Out...Until August!

| | (Post a comment) » Removed: FSAA Comparison: V5500/ GF2If you're looking for our first FSAA comparison article, we've decided to yank it from the site. After a good deal of internal discussion today, we decided on this course of action because the protocols used in the first article were not the best possible way to base a comparison. As mentioned before, we're working on a new comparison test involving two identically configured machines, sitting side by side.
FSAA is a very complex topic, and it's certainly a feature that cannot be characterized, measured, or compared by any traditional means. Because of that, we're going to handle the new article with even more care and attention than anything we've ever done before. FiringSquad is committed to providing the highest quality content. We're not going to be satisfied with anything less than our best possible effort. | Previous news article | Back to main news | Next news article |

(I didn't see this request in any of the earlier posts; if it was
there and I missed it, I apologize.)
In a comparison of GeForce2 and Voodoo5 FSAA, I'd also like to see
screen shots taken without FSAA but at higher resolutions (1024x768
or 1280x1024). The frame rates at 640x480+FSAA and 1024x768-FSAA
are comparable, and I think that simply increasing the resolution
might have a bigger effect on image quality than FSAA would.
The thing to do then, when comparing screenshots at different
resolutions, is to download them, load them in a graphics program
that allows full-screen display, and set your screen resolution to
match the resolution of each graphic in turn.

By pulling that article where the screen shots PLAINLY showed that
the GTS looks better than the Voodoo5, FS shows that 3dfx called up
!$@!@#%@ and moaning and probably threatening to remove all ads blah
blah blah. I'm really disappointed in FS for giving into the 3dfx
mafia.
All you 3dfx boys here ya go.
GTS is faster than the V5 5500.
GTS is slower than the V5 6000 but will be at least 300$ cheaper.
GTS FSAA looks as good as Voodoo's.
The .tga screenshots plainly show that the GTS looks better then the
Voodoo 5 - with or without FSAA. Just like every Nvidia card looks
better than the comparable 3dfx card.
GTS has T&L which is used already and by christmas will be a
must have feature for serious gamers. V5 doesn't have it.
GeForce line are the only cards that use AGP fast writes.
GTS is available NOW while the Voodoo5 5500 you can only pre order
(if you smoke crack) and the Voodoo5 6000 won't be available for
months.
3dfx is the VW bug of video cards. It sucks #!$ but their
tremendous marketing team and appeal to being cool and trendy makes
their half #!$ product sell.
IF YOU BUY V5 U = N00B
Thank you, come again.

They say there's no good D3D benchmarks?
What about Half-Life and Expendable? Especially HL since it has
both D3D and OpenGL.

GeForce2 certainly seems fast but the V5 still has charms about it,
I have seen one running all the T-Buffer demos inc the soft shadows
which is very impressive. Personally I think I will get a GeForce
and wait for a bit...besides would it not be true saying the
followup to this product cycle of voodoos has a scheduled release of
early 2001???

Right, you guys are honorable :)
I think we are entering a stage where one should absolutely not
measure just Q3 benchmark but a once again a wider variety of games
and maybe give some suggestions like: "NFS5 porshe unleashed
looks
fabulous with 800x600x32x4 and runs
smoothly or 1024x768x16x4..." :)
You get what I mean, 138FPS Q3A 640x480 and it looks good just don't
cut it anymore.
Graphics cards are the biggest differentiatior nowadays and they
deserve _full_ coverage.

Yeah. The Banshee was what the Voodoo Rush SHOULD have been. And
the Voodoo3 was what the Banshee SHOULD have been. Then they missed
a product cycle all together. They really screwed up, but I'm not
telling you guys anything you don't already know.

""One card is still pre-release with nearly perfected
drivers, the other is out, but with very immature drivers. "
Dude, no offense, but since when were pre-release drivers ever more
mature than release drivers, thats like saying the Voodoo5 drivers
will never get better. GF2 is using the same drivers as GF so those
drivers would be a lot more refined than Voodoo5 drivers. Usually I
just read these forums and dont post much, but that one statement
bothered me. Pre-Release drivers will never be nearly perfected and
release drivers should logically be better"
I normally don't post either, but I was clearly bothered by this
post. :). GeForce2 Drivers are still not refined. Yes, it uses the
old Detonators, but different binaries, so v5.16 is still a
"beta" for GeForce2s, even though they are VERY mature for
GeForces. Check out Tom's Hardware Guide for that.
IMHO, both cards will improve considerably, since drivers will be
improved. I think VooDoo5's silicon won't improve too much, so it's
not a viable excuse that those 3Dfx freaks make. We'll just have to
wait and see who wins this round.
I, for one won't buy either chip, but prolly a GeForce256 next
year, when it costs $100 a piece. My TNT2 can last me that long,
thank you. Oh yeah, I'd just like to say it's bad to bash other
cards, because if they listen, the card you bash might not sell, and
your fave company may become a monopoly. And we all know what that
means.

For obtaining identical screenshots, why not hook both computers up
to the same mouse & keyboard? This way everything is exactly
the same. Even if such a splitter does not yet exist, it would be
very simple to build such a device.

Who really cares that Geforce 2 has higher framerates at low
resolutions. That really doesnt mean anything when you are already
running at 60fps. It is at the higher resolutions where framerates
start to slow that performance matters the most. Voodoo5 is looking
pretty good to me there.
