» Removed: FSAA Comparison: V5500/ GF2

If you're looking for our first FSAA comparison article, we've decided to yank it from the site. After a good deal of internal discussion today, we decided on this course of action because the protocols used in the first article were not the best possible way to base a comparison. As mentioned before, we're working on a new comparison test involving two identically configured machines, sitting side by side.

FSAA is a very complex topic, and it's certainly a feature that cannot be characterized, measured, or compared by any traditional means. Because of that, we're going to handle the new article with even more care and attention than anything we've ever done before. FiringSquad is committed to providing the highest quality content. We're not going to be satisfied with anything less than our best possible effort.

VOODOO 5 IS CRAP! Why pay 300 bucks for a non T/L piece of melting
plastic, when you can get a higher performance, better overclocking,
T/L support, geforce 2 GTS for a measely 150 bucks!!?? Even if V5
is the tiniest bit better(only in FSAA), is it worth double the
price??? THINK VOODOO FANS... THINK! (oh yeah, just remembered,
voodoo lover don't have brains...)

Well done guys, you held back and did the comparison like the
Pro's you are.

At least now I am happy to make a decision on which card I will
be buying - V5.

The review between the two cards was very interesting! it seems
the GF2 has slightly better frame rates with the eye candy set
lower, but what I want is better images ( 2xFSAA ) all the time,
and if the Voodoo can make all my games look better... well its
the one.

Well done - 10/10

Regards From Bear - Downunder ;-)

Hiya people!

Lets face it, we are all campers in one way or another. I will go so
far as to say that both camps have some key factors that they are
rightfully pushing.

Camp one: Red Team carrying T&L
Pros:
+ Offloading the CPU.
+ First out the door, more time to get THE best implementation of
T&L, because be sure more cards with T&L is coming.

Cons:
- By shuffling functionality from the CPU we are moving to a more
static model, ex. running present 3D games in software looks better
than on the first 3D waves hardware. This gets more specific when
discussing the lightning engine that is tied to the T&L
functionality of the geForce cards. However this is a general
problem when moving software into hardware.

- These first generation T&L cores probably wont be 100%
compatible with future products.

- Lacking fillrate to properly utilize the geForce design.

Camp two: Blue Team carrying FSAA and fillrate power
Pros:
+ Fast
+ Looks good

Cons:
- Delivery problems, 3dfx is slipping behind a generation.
- God that is an ugly card! Especially the V6k. And for that size
and design 3dfx will loose any OEMs which means they will loose
profit and in a big way.

- What is the decibel BTW?

Summary:
Although 3dfx might be a better card right now (considering the lack
of T&L titles etc) I think they will loose in the end. This
voodoo generation will only appeal to the hardcore gamer and not to
the public masses or to the OEM vendors.

Also; the only thing that is speaking for 3dfx is the FSAA feature
and that can be simulated with the geForce making 3dfx loose their
"uniqueness" stamp (actually the only

Have you ever visited Tom's Hardware? If you have you would know
that it is the most objective hardware site on the net! Take this
site for example, it pulled the FSAA article just because some
people said the wrong card won! Now I ask YOU isn't that biased(for
3dfx)? Do this site have any integrity at all? No!
