» Removed: FSAA Comparison: V5500/ GF2

If you're looking for our first FSAA comparison article, we've decided to yank it from the site. After a good deal of internal discussion today, we decided on this course of action because the protocols used in the first article were not the best possible way to base a comparison. As mentioned before, we're working on a new comparison test involving two identically configured machines, sitting side by side.

FSAA is a very complex topic, and it's certainly a feature that cannot be characterized, measured, or compared by any traditional means. Because of that, we're going to handle the new article with even more care and attention than anything we've ever done before. FiringSquad is committed to providing the highest quality content. We're not going to be satisfied with anything less than our best possible effort.

You said that 3dfx had a survey about gamers wanting more FPS and no
32bit color. Let's take a look what happened. They came out with
V3 that gave them more FPS but at the same time Nvidia came out with
their TNT series and kicked V3 around when comparing FPS and they
had 32bit implemented. If 3dfx focused on FPS shouldn't their V3
kick TNT2's but around. Gee I wondered what happened there? From
what I can see know Nvidia tries to revolutionize gaming by
introducing new technology while 3dfx sits on their but and only
make games faster. FSAA can only make the game look better but
Nvidia's NSR and take the visual quality to another level making the
environment more immersive and realistic.

That is one of the reasons why Microsoft probably chose Nvidia for
their X-box. Microsoft isn't stupid to put an inferior product in
their system. When the X-box come out you can bet PC games to
implement all the things Nvidia is coming up with now because game
programmers for the X-box are going to utilize Nvidia's features to
the fullest. Game programmers know that they are going to have to
make games that at least look and run as good as the X-box if not
better.

You think that 3dfx is anywhere near ATI in sales. 3dfx may have
faster cards, but ATI is the OEM king. I don't know where nVidia,
and 3dfx are in relation to eachother. I would assume that nVidia
is ahead since they are getting more OEM deals, and since 3dfx
hasn't released anything since the V3 3500.

I am reading a lot folks blathering on about the differences between
T&L and FSAA, but none of us had really seen either feature
properly implemented. It's just a lot of "My dad can beat up
your dad" crap. Shut the hell up!

I have a TNT2 card right now. What I find very frustrating is that
there is absolutely no way for me to audition FSAA without buying
the card(and I am not talking about screen shots). I am very
interested in visual quality, as long as there is no slide show
involved. I WILL go back and play Thief 2, Half Life, Opposing
Force, Need For Speed PU, Homeworld, Heavy Gear 2 if playing them
with FSAA will make it a better experience. I just hate having to
buy the card to find out if it's really worth it. However, if
800X600 with FSAA looks as good or better than 1600X1200 without it
and gives me comparable frame rates, isn't that worth it?

I think I will probably buy the 5500 when it comes out, be happy
with how it makes my CURRENT games look for 6-9 months, then spend
another 3 months after that drying to decide if I want buy something
better. Heck, maybe 3dfx will have implemented T&L AND done
something with GIGAPIXEL technology by then. Additionally, there
might finally be a good helping of T&L games to choose from.

Funny to see somebody tell somebody else to get their facts straight
when they have no clue as to what the facts are.

You say that 3dfx sells 10 times more than Nvidia does. Yet,
looking at financial results for the last 12 months for each
company, here's what comes up:

Nvidia
Revenues = $375 million
Profits = $38 million (gain)

3dfx
Revenues = $362 million
Profits = $-63 million (loss)

Considering that each unit that 3dfx sells is on average much more
expensive than what nvidia sells (nvidia only sells the chips, after
all), I think it's pretty safe to say that Nvidia is making a HELL
OF A LOT more sales in terms of number of chips sold. Maybe next
time you should do some digging before spewing out misinformation
like that.

And you should get your facts right. 3dfx had a survey of what
PC gamers wanted in there next cards, after they released the
V2. Everyone said, "more FPS, not 32 bit color". It was
Nvidia

who was playing catch up and had to do something different.
Thats where the 32bit from Nvidia came from. 3DFX was
the main 3d card maker then and still is sell more then 10x the
amount Nvidia does now. In fact Nividia is 3rd or 4th. Not sure
which, 3dfx, ATI, way in front then followed by Matrox and Nvidia.
3DFX had Rampage in the works for 3 years and was just
waiting for it to be completed. The problem 3dfx really had was
when they bought STB it slowed them down and made them
late on there next project, V4 & V5. When it comes to features
3dfx is in more competition with ATI them with Nvidia. How many
people will pay $300 for a video card every 6 months to a year
not many. $100 to $200, a lot. Thats where all the other V5
cards come into play.

If your going to buy a card for a feature that will be supported
from now then you either rich or foolish. And who said a
yaer from now that it will be supported. It takes more then
a year to make a game, at least 1 1/2 year, usually 2-3
years. Name the games that are supposed to use T&L next
year. Go ahead do it, you can't can you. Wow, I want my
next card to be the best now. Next year there will have been
2 more Nvidia cards as we'll as every other manufacturer.
T&L then will not be the same as it is now.
If T&L really kicks off, and i hope it does, your looking at
maybe 2 years. That could be 4 more revisions made to
Nvidias boards, 3 for ati, and 2 for 3dfx. Are you gforce &
GTS boards still going to work good with them. We don't
know that it will. Everyone who bought a gforce expected
T&L games for christmas, did they get any. Doesn't look
like the GTS owners will get any this year either.
Its not that i'm against T&L, its that I don't believe in
making purchases on what if's and what maybe.

I'm sorry but what your saying doesn't make any sence unless you
buy

a card only for Q3. I your a PC gamer then you play PC games not
just one. So you would want to know which is the faster gaming
card,

not which one is the fastest at one game. If you want to just test
features then you might as well use a Nvidia demo.
FSAA works with all PC games so you should compare the cards
at that but not T&L. If what your saying is correct then we
should

compare the GTS with the other feature that the V5 has like motion

blur but seeing how no games support it, then that wouldn't make
any sence. You have to compare real world features and T&L
still really isn't one and there no fact saying that it will be.
From

what a lot of games companies have said, it may never be. What
other feature has taken so long to accepted by the game makers.
If they were so impressed by it then they could make patches for
existing games like they did when 3d cards reacted the market.
They didn't so that should show something. T&L has now been
available for 10 months. Make a list of games that use it, then
make a list of games that will take advantage of FSAA. Need
I say more.

for all 3dfx people who keep on saying T&L is useless will eat
those words in a year. If it wasn't for Nvidia we probably won't
even here about T&L for another couple of years. I guarantee
that 3dfx will implement T&L in their next product. What then?
Are all you 3dfx fans spouting how T&L is useless spit on 3dfx
too? Face the fact. 3dfx is playing catch up. Look at 16-bit
situation back then. If it was up to 3dfx we would still be in
16-bit color. Just now with the V5 do we finally get 32-bit color.
See the trend?

Doesn't the fact that NVidia uses T&L to get better fps in
Quake3 show that it has a feature that VooDoo5s don't have, and
therefore gets all the performance it can, even though the card may
be slower? If you don't agree, what about VooDoo5's Hardware FSAA?
Since GeForce5's FSAA is a software hack, as many say, shouldn't its
framerates in non-FSAA be compared to VooDoo5's Hardware FSAA
framerates according to your logic, that cards shouldn't use
whatever advantage they have? See how absurd it sounds?

IMHO, Both cards are excellent, but the only reason someone
should choose one over the other is because of 1)price or 2)claiming
that they have the fastest card with reasonable prices. The two
cards are too similar in terms of speed to matter significantly.

I'll be happy with my TNT2, thank you.
