| | (Post a comment) » Movie Critic Roger Ebert On Games As ArtWell known movie critic Roger Ebert got some gamers in a lather with some comments a year ago that in his opinion video games are not an art form. This past weekend Ebert wrote up a new opinion piece on the subject, this time as a response to an interview of horror writer Clive Barker on Ebert's views. Ebert has softened his views somewhat saying that while video games are indeed art, "games could not be high art, as I understand it." Ebert's views seem to center on games's interaction with the audience which he seems to believe is more like a sport than art. Here is a snip:
If you can go through "every emotional journey available," doesn't that devalue each and every one of them? Art seeks to lead you to an inevitable conclusion, not a smorgasbord of choices. If next time, I have Romeo and Juliet go through the story naked and standing on their hands, would that be way cool, or what? | Previous news article | Back to main news | Next news article |

| | Why ask someone who is held in high esteem in one category for his opinion about an entirely different category? He may be well versed in film, but knows nothing about video games. That's like asking a professional race card driver for his opinion on early British literature. He may be a good driver, but he's not much of a reader. Does that mean books aren't good? » Login to reply to this |

| I don't why he has an interest in this subject in the first place. Is somebody asking him to do video game reviews or something? I very much doubt given that he clearly lacks an understanding of the most rudimentary technical aspects behind video games. I got the distinct impression he was thinking about some sort of board game he once played with his grandkids. No matter, Pulitzer prize winner or not, his opinion is unlikely to dissuade anyone.
...And someone should make a movie where Romeo and Juliet go around naked walking on their hands. That would be way cool. Especially if it starred Jessica Alba. Now that would be art!» Login to reply to this |

| Ebert is being stupid. If games aren't art because they're interactive, then movies aren't art if I can pause them with a remote.
If I draw an apple in Mario Paint, how is that less art than if I draw it in MS Paint?
And there are plenty of games linear enough to qualify as leading you towards an "inevitable conclusion." The endings of Diablo or Mario 64 are far more set in stone than the endings of "The Lady or the Tiger?" or "The Most Dangerous Game." I guess literature != art, also.» Login to reply to this |

| | Why do people always bring up Ebert. Even some in the game industry say it's not art, people like Kojima who's Metal Gear Solid serie is held as one of the standards for gaming as art. » Login to reply to this |
