» BioShock PC CD Key Limited To Two PCs

The PC version of the just released first person action-RPG BioShock apparently limits the owner to installing it on just two PCs. A growing number of posts on the official 2K Games message boards has PC owners up in arms about this move which basically prevents owners from installing their legitimate copies of the game on more than two PCs, meaning if they decide to upgrade their PCs after the limit is hit they won't be able to play the game. This apparently is also an issue on the Steam delivered version of the game as well and FiringSquad can confirm that we have also dealt with the same issue while trying to install the game for benchmark testing. BioShock uses the SecuROM anti-piracy system and according to the message boards when contacted the SecuROM team have told users to contact 2K Games. So far 2K Games has yet to respond to the CD Key activation issue.

Are you a digg.com user? If so, click here to digg this story and share it with other PC gamers.

Update2K Games' Elizabeth Tobey has now responded to the CD Key issue on the 2K Games' forums:

hey guys,

first, let me say this. you DO NOT NEED TO USE THE INTERNET EVERY TIME YOU PLAY THIS GAME. it is only the first time.

second, you can uninstall and reinstall this game, and if, by chance, you have 2 computers you want to simultaneously play this game on, you also can do that.

if by some chance you are reinstalling this game without uninstalling it first, a lot, there is a chance you may have to call securom and get a key, or deactivate some older installations.

but if you upgrade your hardware next week, you'll still be able to play the game. if you revamp your system and need to reinstall bioshock, just uninstall it before you go through the overhaul, and then do your reinstall.

calling it "hardware fingerprinting" is a bit alarmist. we do not transmit any of your data to any companies.

really, the only people who will be concerned about any of these security measures are those who are rapidly putting bioshock on many pcs... if you use the game as you normally do, you won't notice this at all.

UPDATE #2 from Brandon: As mentioned by JCal, I have run into this issue personally while performing BioShock DX9 vs DX10 performance testing. Right now I've got 2 copies of the game activated under Windows Vista, one for AMD Radeon testing and a second for testing NVIDIA GeForce cards with. Unfortunately now I can't run DX9 tests under Windows XP as I didn't realize I had to uninstall the game before formatting the hard drive. What irritates me about this system is why this wasn't made more clear in the manual or the readme file that shipped with the game. Also, what happens if someone has a fatal error in Windows (or a startup file gets corrupted) and can't get back to the control panel to uninstall the game? There are all kinds of additional scenarios that could prevent legitimate owners from playing this game as it stands now.

I have four computers at home, 2 laptops, 1 gaming and one media center. I guess I'll be downloading the Bitorrent version. This is pretty freaking stupid that I have to resort to piracy to be able to install a game I purchased with my hard earned money.

Wow. Everyone just seems to be over-reacting to this. Sure it's a minor annoyance but it doesn't seem any worse the what HL2 put us thru. I'll still snag a copy, play it, and enjoy the hell out of it. If I let a friend borrow it, I'll just have to make sure I uninstall mine first.

In case you forgot, people over reacted about HL2 and Steam much worst. Hell to this day I refuse to buy anything related to Steam.

Unfortunately, it has been confirmed that uninstalling does not give you an installation credit (verified by PCGamer and 2K forums) as of yet. I'm steering clear of this game until this whole mess is sorted out.

» Disappointed
I posted this on the 2K Forums which I think sums up my view and probably others very nicely.

First I would like to say that this CD Key activation and limitation is useless, the only people you are preventing from running this game are the people that went out and bought it. Anyone who wants to illegally get this game has already found a way to copy it, and repack the exe so it will run/install without SecuROM check and CD key. First off if you want to even install this game you have to be connected to the Internet (Yes it was printed on the back of the box but I was so excited to get the damn game I did not bother to check). I realize when you buy a game your paying to play it that you do not really own anything. But when I slap down fifty dollars I expect to be able to play that game when and where I want not limited to two install and having to be connected to the internet (believe it or not everyone has a internet connection on every computer). It took six tries for your copy protection to even recognize your CD code included on the game. It is for this reason I stopped buying any game produced by valve (Half-life 2 and whatnot). I understand your system check is not as invasive as Valves (checks every time the game loads up) but the hassle is the same. As far as two CD keys being enough for a user that is not your call once some one buys the game they should be able to use it on as many PC’s as they like. You still need the CD in the drive to run it its not like someone is spawning copies. And what happens years from now when Bioshock is not supported anymore and I want to play it again? Will I be able to install it or will it stop at the CD check permanently because it cannot connect to your server or SecuROM’s? I understand Bioshock is your intellectual property but once I hand over money for your product I expect that I can use it where and when and as much as I want for as long as the CD it is on holds out. To finish up, you lost a customer I am returning the game (which I ran to get special the day it was released) and will not be purchasing any 2K games until Internet activation is removed from the installations. It’s a disappointment to me a person that bought multiple copies of system shock 2 just because I always wanted to have the ability to play a great game that I felt was a classic.

Yes, I feel basically they same way. Especially about what happens in few years when they stop supporting it, will I be able to install and play then?
This probably doesn't bother some people (or tools) who just run through the game once and never look back. But most of the games I play are old, for one reason it is cheaper to play old games. Also there aren't that many new good games anyway that justify me dropping $2k in a new computer.
(FYI my computer runs Doom 3 just ok but can barely handle the final boss. Fear is mostly ok when I drop all the eye candy.) So I might buy this game in 2-4 years when they have dropped the price and released a patch to deactivated this security feature.
