» Warner Bros. Being Courted To Go HD-DVD Exclusive?

This LA Times story reports that movie studio Warner Bros. is the latest that is being courted by the HD-DVD camp to go exclusive to that next-gen high def disk format. The HD-DVD's main cheerleader Toshiba is said to have given Warner Bros. "a lucrative offer" to go HD-DVD exclusive which would put movies like the Harry Potter series under the HD-DVD banner. The story is based on unnamed sources. Recently Paramount and its sister studio Dreamworks Animation went HD-DVD thanks in part to a $150 million incentive offer.

Downloads are not really the future unless we are given a device that stores and can play the movies at a moments notice. Like an iPod does for music. We don't look at an iPod as the device that it is but we value it because of the media we have stored on it making downloaded music seem as if it was part of the iPod. We like to be able to hold and touch things we pay money for. I do see downloads becoming an option for renting but not for owning movies.

You can pretty much already do that with todays consoles, well with HDTV shows at least.

» My HD movie collection...
..is pretty much split down the middle with roughly 10 per medium.

(I own well over 400 DVDs and 50-60 box sets, but HD movies need to come down in price more before I spend any serious money on them. I purchased most of mine for an average price of $12 anyway)

I hope this ends soon, or that the dual players come down to a respectable level (but alas it won't happen anytime soon that's for sure).

Then there is the talk of the third new medium, not to mention the OTHER medium that was supposed to be able to accommodate both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray...

Maybe one day we'll see something finalized..that would definitely be nice.

As far as which I prefer, HD-DVD seems to be the one with less DRM, is less expensive to produce and has the least expensive players at the moment.

This is so stupid... I would have purchased a nex gen DVD player by now if there was only one product. There must be millions of us!

Yes, if all this cash that seems to be flowing to the studios had been used to subsidise HD-DVD players, they could have a massive install base by now.

Say the HD DVD camp has spent $1 billion in advertising, lawyers, contracts with movie studios etc... that could be 2 million *free* HD DVD players in homes. Or 4 million half price players or whatever...

I bought the PS3 to play games on, playing BRs is a bonus. I'd never buy a dedicated player as the war could last for years and go either way. It's ridiculous. Hopefully whatever comes next is more clear-cut. Bring on holographic data-cubes!

» Hmm
Why not spend the money on selling the players at the 100-200$ mark instead? No point in paying studios if there is no install base. Im not buying any player over 200$.

The reason is that it is cheaper to offer incentives to the film rights owners than to people who buy the player. The incentive to film owners simply is to waive or decrease license payments. This cost Toshiba or Sony NOTHING.
