| | I am proud to say I haven't bought into the hype. I am sure it is a fun game but not worth all the buzz it generated. Halo Special Edition Xbox 360? Special Edition games. Toys. Mt. Dew. » Login to reply to this Legionosh (297) Oct 04, 2007 - 11:21 am
| Pidge...
..I actually like the mountain dew and hope they keep making it once the endorsement deal is over. I kind of doubt it so I am stocking up on it a bit so I have a little in reserve.
..and I agree with Moosemuffin on this. Over advertising (to some people anyway, not me personally) doesn't mean a game isn't good/great or that it isn't worth playing.
That kind of judgment is for the kind of people who like a band until they get signed..then they hate them. The band could make the exact same type of records..but because the band can now actually make a living from their music the fans hate them..retarded if you ask me.
..and no amount of advertising will garner all the positive reviews Halo 3 has been getting, nor will any amount of advertising make ANY game (that isn't good or great) sell $300 million in it's first week.
If it was a crap game we would definitely hear about it from all the reviews. But 99% of them give it 9.5+ (I have yet to see anything lower than a 9.2 personally)..but to you that means "they bought into the hype"..right?
..and while the special edition console may seem a bit much, Japan does it all the time for games like Final Fantasy..but using your logic that must mean Final Fantasy isn't worth playing..right?
..and more and more games are coming out with special editions..although the legendary edition seems to be an exception. But if the fans want it why not give it to them? The extreme Fans of anything will buy things like this..
So before you go on and on with the "I didn't buy into the hype, therefore I am above everyone else", don't patronize anyone who according you "bought into the hype"..
I had originally ordered a limited edition, but when I saw how cool the helmet was I returned it and scrapped up enough to get the legendary.
..did I buy into the hype? Maybe a little, but I like the Halo series anyway. I am by no means one of the extreme fans, but I enjoy the games..and I like the soda.
My two cents,
Kevin

| I think advertising matters more to than gameplay
when it comes to selling a game. Lets face it
people like to be told what to like and what is
fashionable. That's what advertisement campaign
set out to do, to make a product hip and cool.
How many people that bought Halo 3 tried it
before thought it? They can't have had a much
of a chance since they bought it immediately,
so they must have trusted someone else, right.
So even when people say they like it, can you
really trust that their opinion is not tainted
by the brainwashing, I mean advertisement campaign.
Maybe they think they like it, but if they
had played the game without ever having heard
of it before, they might not like it as much.
So is this game any good? I haven't tried it
but I might trick someone to give it to me as
a Christmas present. I'll wait until then to
make a judgment on it.
However, I though that the first game pretty
good but fell a part in the latter levels with
the repeated level design. The second game:
I did not like playing for the other side, so
I thought those levels where boring. I don't
even remember if I even finished it.
Over all I think the level design outdoors is
good but the indoors are bad. Maybe the game engine
has trouble with indoors similar to IDs' engines
problems in the past with outdoors.
The story is on par with most FPS games,
nothing to write home about, better than
Doom but worse than Unreal/Deus Ex.
I have never really played FPS games for
the story, it is nice to have but, you know :)
The graphics when the first Halo game came out
were great, well at least outdoors as indoors
design was so plain it didn't show anything off.
As Halo 2 came 3 years later, they weren't bad but
nothing spectacular either.
From the screenshots of Halo 3, I must say they
don't look like the same big step as Halo did
when it was released 2001. But one must see it
in action to make good judgment on it. Maybe
it's just that there are so many games today
with good graphics that they, games with good
graphics that is, don't stand out as they did
before.
I should note that graphics don't really matter
much to me as I only have a SDTV and play my
PC games at no more than 1024x768.
So to summarize, I liked Halo but Halo 2 not so much.
Actually FS review of Halo 2 is sums it up I think
Halo 3 might be good (close to Halo) or might be a bad
(close to Halo 2), I'll have to wait and see.
As for the the rivalry between Halo (console players)
and PC FPS gamers. I think it might be possible to sum it
up as rivalry between then ignorant and the arrogant.
As people who have not played both are ignorant of
what the other side has to offer. And arrogant, maybe
elitism is a better word, people who think there way
of playing is the only right way. Link: http://www.firingsquad.com/games/halo_2_review/» Login to reply to this |
