| | (Post a comment) » HD-DVD Players Now Outselling Blu-RayThis Video Business story reports that Toshiba, using NPD Group figures, is claiming HD-DVD set-top players are now outselling Blu-Ray players starting in mid-September. HD-DVD players have traditionally been cheaper than Blu-Ray players and Toshiba will release a $299 HD-DVD set top box this month. Toshiba also said that 5 million HD-DVD drives for desktop and notebook PCs will be sold in their fiscal 2008 year. | Previous news article | Back to main news | Next news article |

| | $299.99 HD-DVD player? Bah, I'll just wait a bit for the slightly scaled down $399.99 PS3 to release soon. $100 more you get a high end video game system built-in. Plus it's one less unit to clutter the entertainment area. Done deal! » Login to reply to this

| Not everyone who wants an HD movie player wants a game console, and vice versa.
How cheap would the PS3 be without the BR drive? $300? $200? They'd be winning the console "war" hands down if the were that cheap.» Login to reply to this BloodBlight (5) Oct 12, 2007 - 01:54 pm
| That is a bogus statement.
The PS3 NEEDS storage space, and a DVD just doesn't cut it at 8.7GB. What else is it going to use? HD-DVD? The format that is basically run by the competing Microsoft system? That would be a dumb move to say the least.
So they where left with two options.
One, try to keep using the now dated DVD format and restrict the development of their games.
OR
Two, build a whole new tech and at least try to take the market for the next decade. Why NOT start it on a data platform. If you are going to loose a bunch of money on your initial investment, why not loose it in a division that at least has the possibility to make some of that money back.
And ya, I know I said I wasn't going to post. :)» Login to reply to this BloodBlight (5) Oct 16, 2007 - 04:33 pm
| Ok, for the three movie thing, sorry, missed that.
As for the number of titles, I was using target as an example, but it seems to be fairly consistent where ever I go. And I shop a lot. ^__^
I think you miss understood my color comment, but I have been known to be overly picky. I actually use a color calibration tool for my screens. SO...
However! I just lost any respect I had for you. You have no CLUE how much space a game takes and are talking out your a$$! Here is a list of disk space requirements for a few games:
12.83 GBs == CSI hard evidence
7.05 GBs == project gotham racing 4
6.78 GBs == Thrillville Off The Rails
6.76 GBs == Looney Tunes Acme Arsenal
6.35 GBs == Half Life 2 The Orange Box
6.33 GBs == Tony Hawks Proving Ground
6.08 GBs == Crash Of The Titans
6.08 GBs == FIFA 08
Now you will note that each of these (all picked form the top of the list form our favorite site) is over the 4.7GB mark. Now that means the more expensive dual layer tech right off the bat (CSI even needing two disks), and not much room for growth. And any designer that doesn't leave room, well.. I guess it's a good thing everyone got the version with the extra large HD, right????
My god man! Do you thing we can live on CDs forever?!?! ^___^
But seriously, having 25GBs of space could have some real advantageous. Not having to worry about disk space is one less thing the game developers will have to spend time on. Know what I mean?
Any anyhow, I don't case about the PS3 or the 360, I am a PC gamer, and will probably always be one.
For everyones reference, the 360 has sold 11.6 Million units (as of June) and the PS3 has sold 5.5 Million. And although the PS3 is loosing the console war (no argument there), it does mean that there are an EXTRA 5.5 million players.
One last thing, your numbers are a bit off on Netflix, but not by too much. JUST IN THE WRONG DIRECTION! In August Netflix displayed information requests for 31,271 BR disks, and only 16,921 HD disks! Granted, that is not rental numbers, but it shows a pattern of interest and should translate well.
Ug, if all you people are going to do is spout crap from your nether regions, well, please visit the zoo, there are plenty of other primates you can share space with.» Login to reply to this |

| BloodBlight: First, I mentioned it was 3 blu-ray pron movies, not 3 blu-ray movies in general. I own 18 Blu-Ray movies, so I do know the difference. Second, months ago Target threw their support at Blu-Ray and have expressed repeatedly their Blu-Ray section will be bigger the their HD-DVD. If you look at something less biased, Netflix sends out nearly 2.5 HD-DVD movies to every 1 Blu-Ray. Says something there.
Also in your first post you talk about codecs not being as good in the cheaper HD-DVD player, codecs are not hardware based but software and currently both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray are primarily using VC1 so you have the same transfers. You may be talking about decoders but even then I have never seen bleeding on HD-DVD when comparing the two formats, and this was from the cheap 360 drive.
The PS3 doesn't need the storage space anymore then the 360 does. The only reason Blu-Ray is in the PS3 is to force consumers to adopt their hi-def technology. If they win the format war, that is where the big bucks come from. And clearly it was the wrong choice since PS3 sales have been so far down in the crapper they had to do two price drops and phase out two of their configurations in the first year.
They had two options, and what they did was force gamers to buy not only a game machine, but a hi-def player as well.
Getting back to the stoarge, first of all, not a single 360 game that I am aware of uses more then 1 disk, which includes huge games like Oblivion. Second, as we have seen in the past, it is quite easy to throw a second disk in there if absolutely needed.» Login to reply to this |

| I rarely visit FS anymore, so don't expect a response from me. :)
But I am really curious about a lot of your postings. One gentlemen posted that there where only 3 BR movies??? WHAT? Now, I really don't care a whole lot, I don't have either, but last time I was down at Target, they where selling twice as many BR disks as HD, they had a half rack of then (not repeating), vs about half as many HDs. And the BRs where CHEAPER! Now, I know you are all talking about the drives, but I remember paying $800 for my 1X (YES 1X) Kodak CD Burner, give it time.
Now I have compared the two techs head to head, go to a major video store and ask for “Planet Earth” in both BR and HD. I am an X graphics person, and I felt there was almost no competition. The BR was cleaner, and almost zero artifacting and the color was outstanding. I felt the HD was bleeded out (these where on the SAME TV [they would hate me if I didn't spend so much there], so not a configuration issue), even to the point of saying a normal DVD had better color. That has been MPEG4 one weak spot over MPEG2, and it takes a very nice CODEC to overcome that. Something you may not find in that $230 player...
Just my opinion, but there is no arguing that BetaMax wasn't the better format, but...
As for DRM, ya, did none of you ever own a first gen DVD player? Come now. They all suck!
One last thing. The title of this article is that the PLAYERS are outselling, not the actual media. I would be curious to those numbers... Also, are they including PS3s in that? Not like a company to be deceptive or anything? ^__^» Login to reply to this

| | Wow! It is amazing that the semi-affordable HD option is outselling the rediculously priced HD option. If it wasn't for the PS3, this wouldn't even be a competition. At $300 I would consider HD-DVD. At $600, I would never consider BluRay. Both are too expensive for me to just go and buy one, but at least HD-DVD is somewhat affordable. » Login to reply to this Yoshi (2319) Oct 11, 2007 - 03:28 pm
| $300 is a lot for a HD-DVD player even now. On Amazon you can find them as low as $227.12 at that price as I have said before it's easy to replace a DVD player that is broken with an HD-DVD player without the wife wanting to kill you. | The outdated and feature-less A2 which doesn't even have the capability to output 1080p signals. Right on. You need to step up to the much more expensive $399 A20 to get 1080p playback. At which case, you're at the same price as a BD player. The A2 (or the A1 and probably the A3) are a poor purchasing decision.
The war is on and will be for a long time. Both formats are stuck in neutral. Both have ardent supporters.
Buy a format (or both) and use it.» Login to reply to this |

| For those who are wondering least expensive Blu-Ray player I could find on Amazon had a list price of $424.99 I think this shows why HD-DVD will win the format war pretty much. Oh yeah don't forget the porn industry is backing HD-DVD over Blu-Ray... Link: http://www.amazon.com/Sharp-Aq......2141811&sr=1-12» Login to reply to this Blundaar (226) Oct 12, 2007 - 06:35 am

| The porn industry will have little sway in this format war, unlike the betamax vs. VHS war. There is simply too much downloadable content to be a huge impact on this format war. Hidefdigest recently had an article about the slow adoption by the porn industry and to date, HD-DVD only has 16 titles released (Blu-Ray has 3). It is simply not a valid argument anymore.
Legionosh has valid comments, particularly about the standardization of hardware, which was one of the bigger issues with the movie industry when they were deciding which format to support. If Sony had their act together in the beginning, this very well could be a different story.
I do own a PS3 and enjoy my collection of Blu-Ray movies, but I am still severely disappointed in the movies I am unable to watch because they are on HD-DVD. I may just drop the $150 for the HD-DVD drive for my 360, but it is still not an ideal situation.» Login to reply to this |
