| » Cont Can anyone think of a better 2.1 setup for under $5k?
While this might be semi high-end (defiantly not real high-end), I’ve also owned Paradigms that ran $600 a pair – for towers with built in subs!
Also, on the reciver – can anyone help me compare the Onkyo 875 and the Sony 5300? Both are circa $1,500. I’m looking for a good blend of audio capability and video handling. It would ffed the above 2.1 system and a Mitsubishi WD-65734 (65” 1080p rear proj micro display w/HDMI 1.3).» Login to reply to this GX-Alan (78) Nov 19, 2007 - 09:09 pm
| | $5K budget? You definitely can go high-end with that. I am partial to the Sonus Faber Cremona Auditor, the Dynaudio Contours, and Revel M22's. » Login to reply to this |

| Douglord paradigm are fine speakers but there is much better out there. Don't pigeonhole yourself. Some other brands, among many, are: Triangle, James Loudspeakers, Dali, Celestion, Canton, Dynaudio, ATC, Amphion, B&W, Focal - JMLab, REL, Gallo, Sonus Faber, Revel, Martin Logan, Acoustic Zen, Amphion, Thiel, Vandersteen, Wilson.
These all offer much more sonic pleasure than Paradigm although I do like the signature series from paradigm as they step into a better sonic landscape than their other lines.
Good luck and happy listening.» Login to reply to this |

| » Paradigm Did you guys demo any Paradigm speakers?
Everyone knows there is no such thing as a perfect speaker. It depends on personal taste and how you plan to use them, but I have yet to find a speaker manufacturer with a more complete and solid line up of speakers. I have owned several different pairs over the last 10 years, from entry level to the highest end stuff, and bang for buck is usually 2x anything else I have seen. The kicker is their range. For example something like Definitive Technologies sounds great for a movie or techno, but sucks for heavy metal.
Right now I run a pair of Studio Monitor 100s, which are 5 driver towers that weight 80lbs each and run about $3,000 for a pair. I use a Servo 15 sub, which is one of the only subs on the market that can hit 12 Hz. It weighs 114lbs and has 4,500 watts of peak power (1,500 watts RMS). I think it cost $1,500, plus $300 for the cross over. Can anyone think of a better 2.1 setup for Link: http://www.paradigm.com/» Login to reply to this |

| » Look in the Right Place for your Reviews Not a bad article but I would tell folks to look a little deeper into the audio section if you really enjoy music with your system. If you just like loud rock then this is fine but there is much better out there than polk/jvc for listening to good music even at this price.
You can get good speakers from any of the high end brands he names in the article and 20 or 30 other brands for around the same price that sound much better.
Denon is good for ht but if you enjoy music too look into audio refinement, nad, rotel, arcam etc.
Get your audio recommendations from an unbiased audio site, not a gaming site. Likewise don't go to stereophile for good ideas on a gaming system or the latest fps. :D» Login to reply to this GX-Alan (78) Nov 19, 2007 - 09:13 pm
| That's the thing though. People discount these Polks because 99% of Polk speakers are mid-fi/low-fi stuff. The LSi9's are completely different. It's like saying a Lamborghini Gallardo isn't that great because it's from VW.
Take a listen to them, I found that I had to go to Dynaudio Contours or Sonus Faber Cremona Auditors to get a sound that was "arguably" better. The Revel M22's are very clean, but don't have the full-range performance of the LSi 9.
The JVC receiver was really engineered as a Japanese statement receiver. It's almost on par with the Denon AVR-4802R -- and it's a lot cheaper!» Login to reply to this kcguitar (5) Jan 02, 2008 - 07:00 am
| » Maybe your right... Hey you seem to have some even handed posts here so I'll check out what you say about the jvc and polks. I will say that jvc has never impressed me with their musicality and most ht receivers are produced to make movies go boom, not to play music equally well. I have found a few that do that aren't crazy expensive, Nad being one of them. I did a side by side with a very nice Nad and a Rotel and although the rotel beat the nad in imaging and space around the instruments, the nad was more musically involving where the rotel came out a little too sterile for me. For a little more though the Audio Refinement preamp and multi 5 amp were in a league all their own. It was like comparing my hitachi boom box from high school to a home theater receiver, just extraordinary. My point? Put your money where you like, I would prefer a smaller tv and a better audio system which I have found, 10 minutes into any movie you really experience more from the audio portion of a movie than looking at a big picture because 10 minutes in you really are just watching the movie and not proclaiming "oh my, did you see that Frodo's ring is 3" bigger on this set that my old 36"? : )
I'm not a fanboy of any brand because no one can say "this is the best" as I have learned with audio everyones ears are different. Hell, I even get tired of speakers I have had and trade them out all the time because I get tired of them and I'm talking some nice speakers by JM lab, dynaudio, psb, triangle, dali, b&w and the list goes on. It's just important to get something that's right for you.
Having said that your comment about speaker wire in this thread is true. I know for a fact it makes a difference as I was a long time doubter and then I did a lot of a/b tests where I finally had my eyes opened. The friends I did the tests with were equally convinced but, I know their ears can hear the difference. To try and convince everyone that there is a difference, esp when many people really can't hear it, is like trying to describe a rainbow to a blind man. Good luck.» Login to reply to this |

| Whats up Alan, Alexis, Brandon...
I recently purchased a new everything. I'm loving it so far. I'm a wee bit bummed about no mention of the better LCD TVs because they've come a long way.
I got the new 52" XBR4. 120Hz, 1080p24 all the perks, it's an amazing TV.
