» CES News: Gizmodo Banned From CES 2009?

In all of the coverage of CES 2008, none of it was more...interesting..than tech blog Gizmodo, whose staff members decided to take a infrared device during the show to shut off flat screen TVs at exhibits and also to shut down monitors during a Motorola press conference. You can see a video showing off these activities at Gizmodo's web site. Opinions on the activities ranged from "That's funny" to "That's going over the line". CNet reports that the Consumer Electronics Association, the organizers of CES, have decided to ban at least one Gizmodo staffer from future CES events and is considering other actions against Gizmodo and its owner Gawker Media.

They should have done this at Best Buy. Now that might be funny. CES is not the place for teenage pranks.

I would have to say it should get them banned. You are talking about companies rolling out products and spending sometimes millions of dollars to set up a booth for an event like that and roll out new products. In turn they hurt the image of the companies who made these press showings.

Not everyone is going to know what happend at the show durring these press events. So basicly what they did was on par with the Windows 95 blue screen printer hook up press event.

Why didn't they just cover up the sensors on the TVs before putting them on display...

Jesus, does anybody have a sense of humor any more?

Really though, I shed a tear for those who didn't get to see that self-righteous a-hole Fatality in his little competition and ALL those customers Motorola will undoubtedly loose as a result of this joke.

Seriously, no harm, no foul. I just wish I'd of thought of it first.

I think it's pretty funny that Gizmodo got banned. Evidently Gizmodo lacks a sense of humor when it comes at their expense.

Guess that answers my question.

This stunt is no different than when someone crashes a Star Trek, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings convention with a video camera to make fun of the regular nerds in attendance, except they at least have a sense of humor (generally).

Did any companies stock go down as a result?: NO

Was anyone physically or mentally harmed?: NO

Did a bunch of frail nerd sensibilities get shattered by a little joke?: YES

Of course he deserves to get banned, but I'm sure the guy knew that from the minute he came up with the idea. I'm just totally shocked by the response of people looking for a rope and the highest tree. In closing, LIGHTEN UP PEOPLE!!!

It's more like using a laser pointer at the movies. The guy should be banned for being unfunny.

That was stupid, i'm glad they got banned, though the title implies that all of Gizmodo was banned :S

They should be.

Get pulled over in a car and your friend is taking horse tranquilizers than you, the driver, will be responsible for his actions.

Same thing except substitute car with CES, drugs with retard and driver with Gizmondo.

not necessarily as it might have been a rogue operation by only 1 or 2 people and while that does tie closely with your car example this doesn't involve life or death (as with a car crash possibility)

Except that they posted videos of it on their website to profit from it. I would say that makes the whole company culpable.

hmmm, good point, though I might not necessarily agree with how that works ;) as it's not always possible to control your employees

No but another example would be like if I was working and decided to go punch a stupid customer or damage their vehicle (on purpose) then I would get fired and my boss would be held accountable for it.

I am a representative of my bosses workplace and set an example for that business. When I do something wrong it looks bad on me, my boss and the business itself.

Gizmondo is harboring terrorists and should be bombed. :D
