| | (Post a comment) » Judge Overrules Manhunt 2 Ban Appeal In UKGameSpot is reporting that a judge has ruled against an appeal to the ban of Rockstar's stealth action game Mahunt 2 in the UK. Last year the UK's British Board of Film Classification. banned Manhunt 2 from being sold in that country. Rockstar appealed that ruling and later in 2007 the country's Video Appeals Committee voted 4-3 to overturn the BBFC's ban on the game. Today in a court hearing the judge in the case overturned the VAC's decision. Here is a snip:
In an all-day hearing at the Royal Courts of Justice in London today, the Honourable Mr Justice Mitting sided with the BBFC's argument that the VAC (the original appellate committee) had erred when considering whether Manhunt 2 could be considered harmful to minors who viewed it. Whereas the VAC interpreted this as "actual harm," the BBFC and Mitting believed it should be taken in a broader scope of "potential harm and risk of harm." The BBFC also argued that the VAC based its decision on whether or not the game would have a "devastating effect on society," and argued that this "harm threshold" was too high.
The appeals committee was ordered to go back and make a new decision on the game based on guidelines that the judge gave to them today. That new decision is expected in a couple of weeks. | Previous news article | Back to main news | Next news article |

| | I expect reporting like this from the NY Times, LA Times, The Village Voice, moveon.org, misc. Liberal Blogs, ect. I am dissapointed in Fox for that report, but it's not like the Liberal Media has always printed retractions. And besides, I'm reminded of the times Hillary Clinton and the democrats have attacked the video game industry! » Login to reply to this |

| "The harm threshold was too high"... What the fuck does that mean? Not to mention, why are minors even being discussed? Do they ban porn because minors may see it? Do they ban action movies because minors may have access to it?
This discrimination against interactive entertainment needs to come to an end. It's a load of crap. Although stating what everyone who will read this post already knows probably doesn't do a whole lot of good either...» Login to reply to this Pun-ky Notgonawurkhereanymore (350) Jan 24, 2008 - 05:38 pm
| I agree w/ ya there. I mean, I don't understand what the fuck is so hard to comprehend about the rating systems. Just like movies are specifically targeted at an age/maturity group, games should be treated as such.
I know what it is, too. It's just that the collective psyche of society still follows that games are made for kids, and thus, only kids play games, and it's something that they'll grow out of.
The shitwizards that go out and wreak havoc are those that would have done it anyway, regardless of games, movies, or Fox News.» Login to reply to this
