I like the article -- please follow up with 4 DIMMs and at least SLI testing.. didn't intel once show this board with FOUR 8800Ultra in SLI ?

I dont believe so, highest you can go with ultra and gtx is 3 on a 780i chipset. This article explains that intel bought some technology off of nvidia that supports only 2 cards in sli on the intel chipset previewed in this article.

» I dont get it?
Workstation: CPU bound
Gaming rig: GPU bound

Without faster vid cards this rig won't play Crysis any better than all the other rigs you have tested. The only difference, that I see, is that skulltrail will be able to run an intensive numeric simulation in the background while you are still getting substandard frame rates in Crysis, which for the 5k+ this rig will cost is inexcusable. This is interesting but still not my dream rig, give me a game that is fun to play, looks great and can actually use this horse power becuase it is doing serious number crunching for the sake of simulating real world physics, then I'll take notice of this beast. Essentially this rig has a HUGE engine and a a tranny (the GPUs) with crappy ratios and big off road tires (the FBDRAM), but its a road race, holding it back. I love analogies :)

Unless I missed something that is about it but don't get me wrong, I think it is really cool to have 8 processors (and would love to see them used in a game) I just don't clearly see a gaming connection and I really don't see the mainstream market connection, at all.

I'd buy the processor for it's awesome name alone.

I'm going to be an economics grad student in not so long.

I wonder if I can convince my parents they need to buy a Skulltrail... and a few 8800 Ultras, of course :P

They would probably think Skulltrail is associated with Satan and would perform an exorcism.

If they were going to perform an exorcism, you'd think the Megadeth poster would have already prompted that.

Still, though, it probably would be a hard sell. "Hey, next year, for grad study, can you buy me a Skulltrail?"

The FB-DIMMs are a mistake.

Also more than two cores is an overkill for now.

So I'm currently gaming on a core 2 duo laptop with 8600gt and I don't feel the need to upgrade the cpu or the the mobo.
(I do feel the need to upgrade gfx tho but that's another story)

I think that the only way for PCs to win with consoles to is to provide much more computing power for the buck than X360 or PS3, especially in the gfx department.
