| | (Post a comment) » HD-DVD Camp Responds To Netflix And Best Buy Blu-Ray MovesNews.com reports that the HD DVD Promotional Group has issued a statement on Monday's developments in the high-def disk war, namely that Netflix has decided to phase out the rental of their HD-DVD movies in favor of Blu-Ray and that Best Buy will encourage customers to choose Blu-Ray hardware and software in its stores:
We have long held the belief that HD DVD is the best format for consumers based on quality and value, and with more than 1 million HD DVD players on the market, it's unfortunate to see Netflix make the decision to only stock Blu-ray titles going forward. While the Best Buy announcement says they will recommend Blu-ray, at least they will continue to carry HD DVD and offer consumers a choice at retail. | Previous news article | Back to main news | Next news article |

| Well realistically they said what any other company would in that position. Make the best of it.
You know if HD-DVD dies then we'll be dishing out even more money for players and titles when BD prices skyrocket. As a consumer you wouldn't want (for an example) AMD/ATI to die off would you? If you do well I guess that proves another point.» Login to reply to this Legionosh (297) Feb 12, 2008 - 08:02 am

I totally agree (while I admittedly wanted HD-DVD to win I am glad to finally see, what appears to be, an end to this Hi-Def war.
It will be nice when movies stop being $35 new, but hopefully that will change in time.
Until then, used Blu-Ray movie are my choice.
Please bring on the lower prices to the consumer.

| | The competition in the Blu-Ray will come from amongst the hardware manufacturers and the movie distributors themselves competing for customer's attention. Unlike HD-DVD, which only has Toshiba, Blu-Ray has multiple hardware manufacturers, which means that there will be multiple Blu-Ray drives competing with each other for consumer attention. » Login to reply to this |

| DVD had no other competition and the prices drop relatively quickly. And the MSRP on DVD's were around the $30-35 range when they were first released as well.
As soon as there is only one format and sales increase, prices will continue to drop. Remember, Blu-ray players are not only in competetion with HD DVD, but also with each other. This is one of those times having only one standard will result in lower prices, just like it did for DVD.
Digitial distribution is still a long way away when it comes to high definition content.» Login to reply to this |
