| | (Post a comment) » GDC 2008: Far Cry 2 PC Tech Demo ImpressionsOver at Intel's booth during GDC the PC processor company was showing off a brief graphical tech demo of Far Cry 2, the upcoming "sequel" to the first person shooter. In this case, "sequel" is a misnomer since the game has nothing to do with the original Far Cry developed by Crytek in 2004. Aside from the name nothing else, not even the Cryengine, is being used for Far Cry 2.
The live tech demo (which we could see but could not play) showed off some of the visual tricks that Far Cry 2 will contain. The game takes place somewhere in Africa and the demo level showed a wide expanse of empty African wildlife (just bushes, trees and grass with the exception of one small animal see in the distance) One new feature is the procedural vegetation that will be seen by the player. Our demo operator shot off pieces of the bush with his pistol and showed how the pieces are shot off individually instead of a pre-set animation. Each blade of grass in the tech demo swayed in the wind on its own; there will be no large clump of grass that will move in the wind as we see in many other games.
We also got to see the game's weather and day-night system as the demo operator caused the sun to rise and set quickly. The lighting effects are pretty impressive with soft shadows that move as the sun light sources moves and is cut realistically when the sun moves behind bushes and trees. The weather system showed off the full 3D cloud effects as they get more numerous and dark while the wind and rain began to fall. Pieces of the bush that were shot earlier by the demo operator actually were pushed around the level by the wind.
That was pretty much all there was to see of the Far Cry 2 tech demo at the Intel booth. There were no enemies, no vehicles, no explosions and just the one small animal out in the distance that we could even move up to it to see it up close. The tech demo is just a taste of what the full game should be like and we hope to hear more about the game in the month leading to its release. | Previous news article | Back to main news | Next news article |

| » Keep your fingers crossed on this one! Hopefully...and I say that with much hesitation...FarCry 2 will be what Crysis should have been. Hopefully it will run smoother on systems than Crysis does.» Login to reply to this Kerrick (217) Feb 22, 2008 - 06:07 am
| have you ever played crysis? It runs fine on my 5 year old 3.2ghz p4 with an x1950 video card. I play it at 1280x960 with everything set to medium, which still looks better than farcry with everything on high!
It's not perfect, but considering how old my computer is, I can't imagine it playing worse on newer computers.
And the gameplay is extremely FUN! just what a game should be.» Login to reply to this infernal (36) Feb 25, 2008 - 05:41 am
| | Regardless of the technical issues, I didn't quite like Crysis. The A.I. was dumb as shit, and that, combined with the ability to disappear pretty much at will, well... made it too easy » Login to reply to this |

| | These are gaming fanatics who buy all the leading edge computer components and cry like spoiled little children when a game doesn't run at 60+ FPS on their SLI cards, 1920 x 1200 26" widescreens with all graphic options on. The fact is that when a game developer starts to program a cutting edge game, they don't exactly know what the hardware situation will be in 3-4 years, so they have to make a guess and allow people to adjust the graphics settings to get high FPS. » Login to reply to this |

| | Yes but people would rather jump on the bandwagon of saying it melts computers and plays like crap no matter what the truth is! » Login to reply to this |
