» Radeon HD 4850 512MB and GeForce 9800 GTX+ Performance Quick Take

In one corner we have the new and improved 800 shader, Radeon HD 4850. In the other, NVIDIA's improved 55-nm GeForce 9800 GTX+. We've also thrown in GeForce GTX 260, GeForce 8800 GT, 8800 GTX/Ultra, and the original 9800 GTX. See where the cards stack up in performance inside!

Am I the only person that sees a problem with benching with AA and very high resolutions when you're barely managing 20fps in the tests? No one in their right mind would spend hundreds of dollars on a graphics card to watch Crysis skip around at 18fps average just to say they are running at 1600x1200 with AA.

I'll admit I'm a bit of a framerate nazi, but come on, 22fps average for a first person shooter? And then the resolution is cranked up again for 14fps?? Half of your mouse clicks and key presses don't even register at framerates this low. I played the game at a mix of high\very high settings in DX9 mode at 1280x960 with 8xAF and NO AA on an 8800GTX and 3.6Ghz Core 2 duo to get the game smooth in some of the slower areas.

I generally trust Firingsquad's reviews more than other sites' but its hard to take benches seriously when they're run at clearly unplayable graphics settings. If your baseline card (8800GT) is running well under 30fps average, it seems like it'd make sense to turn the settings down so that the test results represent a realistic gaming situation.

Just my 2 cents.

It's tough balancing the game settings when you're running cards that range from a single 8800 GT, to SLI setups like the 8800 GT, 9800 GTX, and two GeForce GTX 280s. That's a very wide range of performance!

That's true.

I'd just suggest raising your minimum acceptable FPS average to the 30s, even in the most hardware intensive games.

For example, start with the most widely used card (most likely the 8800GT right now), and bench it so that it reaches the mid to high 30fps range, and then bench all other cards at those settings.

That's still pretty slow by most people's standards (since 30fps average means half of the time it could be running under 20fps) but its a bit more reasonable and the faster cards would just be more playable.

I think that the game settings are pretty reasonable for every game except Crysis. That game is a unique situation that just doesn't scale all that well regardless of what you throw at it. Now maybe I should just test in a less intensive area (I use the rescue map with lots of foliage), but I really don't want to turn down the settings any further. Going from 0xAA to 2xAA in the game really only drops fps by 10% max, so even if I turned that settomg down the 8800 GT still wouldn't score 30 FPS in the area I test in.

"Had their launch gone off unopposed?"... lol
nvidia has NADA to fight this baby back. the overpriced 9800 GTX is slower, and this new + card is not even here and is almost the same so where is the opposition?

Did you not notice the price cuts on Friday??

Hit up Newegg, Tigerdirect, zipzoom, etc for NVIDIA's response to the 4850. There you will find that NVIDIA has slashed prices on their entire GeForce 8/9 series GPUs as they obviously saw the price/performance that the 4850 was bringing to the table.

And in the past 12 months we've ran sponsorships with AMD, Intel, and NVIDIA, so I'm not sure where you're going with that argument either...

"money > integrity as always. and nice gtx ads you got there"

What do you expect Firingsuqad to do? Not review a graphics card by NVIDIA simply because a few ATI fan boys really want ATI to win this round? And as for ads, unless Firingsquad starts charging visitors, they are going to have to earn money somehow to support this website.

I must say I am impressed with the showing so far from ATI. I already have an 8800GTS 512MB however it sure is tempting to purchase two ATI 4850 graphics cards and run them in Crossfire mode since my motherboard supports it but Anand seemed to have problems getting them to run with his 1000 watt power supply and mine is only 750watts. I am going to skip this round since I am not ready to invest in a new power supply. The last time I purchased a power supply was back when I was running two 7800GTX graphics cards in SLI mode. I thought back then 750watts is going to last me forever.

what i want is irrelevant here. JUST THE FACTS
amd is the best option here. now. today. bu, bu in a month nvidia launches a new video card that
cost teh same, lol, lol, amd plans are ruined, lol, lol...FAIL. and the nvidia solution consumes more power and is not even faster. doublefail. gtfo nvida ( from a nvidia 8600gt user)

Thats because ther last few years nvidia has come out with the better cards. I dont think it has anything to do with being "swayed".

Firingsquad always been swayed by Nvidia. I'm just wondering if this website is sponsored by nvidia themselves.

Some proof reading would have been nice. Here is a quote from the conclusion:

"The 9800 GTX runs about 8 or 9% faster than the 9800 GTX, which..."

One might say that is a bit confusing :-)
