» AMD trims CPU prices, adds new CPUs

Today AMD has launched a trio of new Phenom CPUs, the 2.6GHz, 140W TDP Phenom 9950 Black Edition, and 65W TDP Energy Efficient Phenom 9350e and 9150e, which are clocked at 2.0GHz and 1.8GHz respectively.

As you can see, in addition to the new Phenom CPUs, AMD has brought back several dual-core Athlon X2 SKUs, and they've also dropped the Phenom 9600 and 9500 from their lineup. The entire triple core Phenom CPU line saw $20 price cuts across the board, while the Athlon X2 6000+ and several other X2 CPUs also saw nice price cuts. We've been told that pricing on the Phenom 9850 Black Edition will be cut to $205 next week, so that's going to be the quad-core CPU to get among budget shoppers shortly.

What is technically AMD's fastest performing CPU right now? I'm kinda lost. Honestly. Are X2 CPUs still faster than Phenom's or have Phenom's finally past them in performance?

Like others have mentioned before, it depends what app you will use to judge performance.

If it can take advantage of all 4 cores, then your best bet is to get the fasted quad core.

If it does not, or only takes advantage of dual cores, then the best performance will come from the raw Mhz of each core. So if phenom CPU frequency > x2 then phenom will be faster. If x2 Mhz > phenom, then it will run the apps faster.

But in all honesty you would be better off in the long run getting a quad core.

Define fast. Remember, for a while most dual cores were slower than most single core CPUs. But the fact they were dual core made them much better (Sometimes more than double the performance) than single core CPUs depending on the application.

I think what he was trying to get at, out off all this mess we see what is the so called flagship performance wise that we see in this list from AMD? That being said the 9950 is pretty damn cheap, What compares to this from Intel? Also why does the 9850 cost the same as the 9950 when it seems like the lesser cpu?

I guess I mean for gaming, would the fastest Phenom be faster than the fastest Athlon 64 X2?

Probably Phenom since it has more cores. This is assuming that the game you have in mind can take full advantage of it.

You do realize that some of these CPUs are a few years old? Not to mention they range from single core, dual core, and quad?

And I do agree, your complaint doesn't make much sense...

With all due respect, your complaint doesn't make a whole lotta sense.
