» AMD launching $499 Radeon HD 4870 X2 in late July?

DigiTimes is reporting that AMD plans to launch their dual GPU Radeon HD 4870 X2 card by the end of this month. In addition, reference design boards with up to 2GB of GDDR5 will be sent to board partners by the end of this month. Price? According to DigiTimes sources, the cards will be priced at $499, undercutting NVIDIA's GTX 280 significantly. If this is indeed true, one 4870 X2 board would be less expensive than two 4870 cards running in CrossFire.

Really while this is a great card you can't really see this being the major card on the market compaired to a 4850 which is an amazing value for the buck.

Only problem AMD has is that so many people have a single PCI-Exrpess slot that will work for this card. At least taking the crown in graphics card makes buying a AMD CPU seem a lot better.

The $90 Nvidia GTX280 price cut doesn't even come close to competing with ATI's HD 4870 price of $300.

Am really glad to see a strong showing by ATI/AMD

If i had the money then definately wouldnt mind sinking those dollars into a nice set of these in crossfire!!

God I love competition. Let's see Nvidia keep their high price on the GTX 280.

They're already cutting the price. Good job AMD/ATI!

I saw that they cut the prices, but it's still not enough. Nvidia's still not performing well in terms or price/performance ratio. I haven't had an ATI card since my 9800pro, but I'm very tempted by these 4870s.

I agree - how can they stick 2*4870 into 1 card? - it would require at least 4 power connectors and a 100Db fan to stop it melting down.

They could possibly use mobile chips instead of desktop chips like the NVIDIA Geforce 7950GX2.

I think they should start using larger fans. The heatsinks are many times adequate in size but those tiny fans really should be replaced.
