» Intel Core 2 Duo E8600 Review

With dual processing cores clocked at 3.33GHz, Intel's Core 2 Duo E8600 is a serious performer, but it's an even more impressive OC'er. Check out Brandon's thoughts on the CPU in our Core 2 Duo E8600 review!

lets hope Brandon has an opportunity to run the benches with the chip OC'd for an update, well, unless he can incorporate it into a new review of a 4870x2 that hes already working on ;)

nice article.

which graphics card were you using in the test system? (did not see that mentioned, as of this writing)

it will be interesting to see how StarCraft II performs in those tests.

thanks Brandon.

the stable 4.64 GHz OC was pretty exciting. did you have a chance to run any benchmarks with the chip running at that speed?

I'm surprised you said that, since the review shows just the opposite!

The cpu matters greatly unless you are trying to run at some ungodly resolution where the video card is holding you back.

if you get a good cpu, you need a good gpu.

I dont find evidence to support your assertion.

HD4870 is pretty high end, and every single game was GPU limited at a relatively modest 1600x1200. (I hope folks aren't buying these things to game DX10 at 800x600!?). What the graphs do show is that keeping your old AthlonX2 or Core2Duo wont hurt much if at all.

Using faster GPUs like 4870x2 or GT280 SLI, would have perhaps shown more bottlenecking earlier on from CPU side. However its probably not typical GPU setup for your average E8600 buyer.

Oh and btw: only 2 games I've seen with any improvement from Quad are Lost Planet and Supreme Commander - so this is pretty much the best overall CPU for games on the planet.

anybody here who actually EVER used 800x600 in any game in the last 5 years, raise your hands..

(*settle down Kerrick.. one hand at a time*)
PS lowest I can recall - Radeon 8500 + BF2 Med Qual - 1024x768.

sorry, but the cpu does matter. Just look at the graphs again, the 8600 is 50% faster than the phenom even at 1600x1200. Granted that is at low quality, but it is still a difference. There is more to gaming than graphics performance. A lot of games, specifically rts games rely more on the cpu than the gpu.

You need both a high quality cpu AND gpu. To say one or the other makes no difference is absurd.

And nobody mentioned multithreading in this article.

You are absolutely correct. Furthermore, your comment has been correct for a number of years now.

If a build's CPU is bottle necking the GPU then a gaming rig is not the machine that was built.
If the GPU is the bottle neck then the price performance has probably been maximized.

» Edit
The Crysis benchmarks say Quake Wars over the graphs - are they the correct graphs? Other than that, a nice article. I sure hope the game devs keep accounting for more than 2 cores....

The graphs were correct, I just uploaded the wrong code for page 7. I've corrected the page and it now shows the Crysis graphs instead of repeating the same graphs for ET:QW.
