» Halo 3 Recon announced

Sooo, it turns out that the Bungie teaser trailer we linked too a few weeks back is indeed another Halo 3 project, more specifically, it's a prequel dubbed Halo 3 Recon. In the game you'll play the role of a UNSC Recon Marine taking on the Covenant.

A 2:50 trailer has been released. The trailer builds on the snippets we first saw in the Bungie teaser trailer last month, which depicted an alien invasion force landing on several cities. You've been sent out to gather intelligence on the enemy force, which is where the trailer basically ends.

Halo 3: Recon will be released in Fall 2009.

UPDATE 11:20AM: Microsoft has updated their Halo 3 Recon site with more details on the game:

  • All-new campaign content: The Halo 3: Recon campaign is an intriguing side story that takes place during the terrifying events leading up to the Master Chief’s return to New Mombasa in Halo 3. Experience the fate of Earth from the brand-new perspective of a special forces ODST (Orbital Drop Shock Trooper), adding a unique outlook and new gameplay elements to the events that unfold in the trilogy’s finale. While the feel of this new chapter greatly resembles that of previous Halo experiences, Halo 3: Recon will require you to employ more elements of stealth and cunning than ever before.
  • Prepare to drop: Known for their courage, valor and, at times, insanity, ODSTs are among the fiercest UNSC soldiers, priding themselves on being the first unit deployed into hostile situations. While not as large or supernaturally gifted as their Spartan comrades, these "Hell Jumpers" more than compensate with their ferocious attitudes and unwavering nerve.
  • Expanded multiplayer collection:No Halo experience would be complete without groundbreaking multiplayer content, and Halo 3: Recon gives fans more of what they love. With exclusive new maps and expanded Forge options, Xbox LIVE® Gold members will find more multiplayer content than ever before with Halo 3: Recon.
  • Ever-growing community options: Enjoy all the great Halo 3 technological innovations, including Saved Films, screenshots, Campaign Scoring, and four-player co-op. All of the new multiplayer maps fully support the Forge editor, offering endless gameplay customization possibilities.

The expanded universe is what makes Halo great, not the games themselves.

Not crazy about playing an ODST, though. They always came across as macho, testosterone-fueled bullies jealous of the Spartans' success.

However, none of that will affect the gameplay much, only the narrative. So I will probably give this the benefit of the doubt and try it. Curious to see how they'll tone it down since you're not playing a Spartan this time (no Mjolnir enhancements)

Halo should be about the Chief =/ I never really liked it when Dev's tried to milk franchises by doing these kind of things, but we'll have to see how this turns out.

It's called Halo 3, not MasterChief 3. Therefore, I see nothing wrong with this game. I've always wanted to play the game through the eyes of a regular soldier.

    » Fail
This will be a massive success/failure at the same time. Tons of people will buy this so it will be a success but the game will be missing everything that Halo is about since the entire thing is about Master Chief.

I disagree... from the start bungie wanted to make this a detailed and "believable" universe. They put A LOT of effort in the design and story of non-spartan characters in the game. just because it is a halo game that doesn't focus on the master chief, doesn't mean that it isn't a halo game. It is a halo game because it about the struggle of the human race to survive an alien onslaught. For those that care about the story anyway.

This will be interesting though.. since normal halo games are more or less run around and blow shit up to your hearts content. This will probably take quite a bit more tactics since you kinda lack a shield... powerful armour... and the strength to punch a jackal's face in with one hit. Hell, you may actually feel like the underdog rather than some crazed guy on steroids (literally) going on a rampage... at least before you turn on all the skulls and you are suddenly afraid of the lone grunt with a plasma pistol.

I didn't read any of the books or to be honest even the manual for any of the games. I played them for the game play, I play RPG's for the story. This game is just going to be very un-Halo. I'm not saying this wont be a good game. It just wont be a good Halo game because it will be missing the game play that you play Halo for. I don't want Splinter Cell gameplay in my Halo games. I want to run and gun and blow shit up.

It may or may not be like a halo game... guess it depends on how Bungie makes it. I mean, the soldiers you play as are second only to the Spartans among the humans in combat ability, and probably #1 in insanity. But instead of solo run and gun of past halo games, I think this is going to stress squad play much more. Maybe like Ghost Recon rather than Splinter Cell.

I remember renting the original Halo and playing for about an hour or so, but the storyline for the prequel is the kind of thing I like. Yeah, it's been done, but it is still interesting to me.
