» Windows 7 gets a name: Windows 7

Microsoft has announced the name for their successor to today's Windows Vista OS: "Windows 7".

As you probably know, Windows 7 has also been the codename for Microsoft's next OS, so this marks the first time Microsoft has used the codename for the final retail name of a Windows product. According to Microsoft, the Windows 7 name was chosen for its simplicity:

The decision to use the name Windows 7 is about simplicity. Over the years, we have taken different approaches to naming Windows. We've used version numbers like Windows 3.11, or dates like Windows 98, or "aspirational" monikers like Windows XP or Windows Vista. And since we do not ship new versions of Windows every year, using a date did not make sense. Likewise, coming up with an all-new "aspirational" name does not do justice to what we are trying to achieve, which is to stay firmly rooted in our aspirations for Windows Vista, while evolving and refining the substantial investments in platform technology in Windows Vista into the next generation of Windows.

Simply put, this is the seventh release of Windows, so therefore "Windows 7" just makes sense.

Windows 7 is expected to be released sometime next year.

Like many of you who crawled around on BBSs', hacked and slashed in Team Fortress/Diablo back in those '98 days when Firingsquad came to be, clean install of good olde '98se was like hot pair of underwear straight from drier.

FYI (I dont recall exact figures but more or less):

minRAM hdd MB innovation
win3.1 1? 10 winsock, flying toasters, File manager
NT3/NT4 ? ? ver for Alpha/RISC CPU/server.. first MS 32bit OS and security
95 4-8 50 pnp, clean look, multimedia (movies,CD,sound,etc), DOS
98 16-24 175 pnp that works, D3D, IE, FAT32
Mil 32 with MSN propeganda? Ms BOB? 'Helpful' paperclips and dogs running the show.. task oriented. IE more integrated
2000 32-64 650 NT5. NTFS. 32bit. DOS is gone for good. love it. stability. initially driver issues.
XP 64-128 1500 after numerous 2000 patches, MS works on fixing gaping security holes.
Vista 512-1GB 15000 Pretty Aero effect. DX10. integrated search. long checklist of features that didnt make it.

- infamous, it may only be a 1MB file, but I'm taking sweet time figuring time takes to copy it, issue -

wow, how imaginative :/

I also have no problems whatsoever with Vista and quite like it, I just hope this doesn't turn into some kind of necessary upgrade, like if gaming performance magically becomes much higher with Windows 7, really kick in the gut for those who bought Vista (especially since Vista and 7 are suppose to be mostly the same)

I wouldn't worry about that. Vista will get DX11 as well, the only thing Windows 7 will ship with additionally graphics-wise. The big difference will be in 7's design to be modular. The reason they haven't discussed specific features is because they can wait til later in the development cycle to announce them. They simply disable that feature without impacting the base OS. It's a much better design. We'll have the same options, install what we want, leave off what we don't. Much more like Server 2008.

Early versions of Windows, had setup show optional components and many were not installed by default. With XP and Vista those days are long gone.. pretty much everything is installed... except languages - but dont worry, I got funny feeling Windows 7 will be throwing in the kitchen sink and bathtube too.

Afterall, with today's 750GB drives, you gotta fill the void with something.. else.. too.

Vista has been like a charm to me, too. I don't see the hate everyone has for it. The only issue is that Visioneer didn't make drivers for my scanner, but aside from that...

Vista is:
-More stable
-Looks better
-Runs well
-Easier to navigate

Agree with everything except the last point (easier to navigate)

I constantly miss XP's "Places" bar and Vista's search is a slow, unreliable mess.

I never used the "places" bar, (that's on the left when folders are open right?)

something I love about Vista navigation is the ability to search at the start bar :) though in ways that feels more like a consolation for removing how 'all programs' pops out which should have been kept
