| » CyberPower seems to have the best value! I priced the same system at Falcon Northwest, with the exception of the 6GB of memory compared to 3GB of memory for the CyberPower system, which takes off about $300. The Falcon was $5700 dollars. Is better styling worth an additonal $1100 dollars? I would rather have a beast of a system with a nice case at a reasonable price instead of paying extra money (more than $1000 dollars) for a beast of a system with a NICER case. I'm no advocate for either company, but value is value. A comparable system from AlienWare (with only 3GB of memory) runs around $5800 dollars. A Dell 730x runs around $5200 dollars for a similar build. It seems CyberPower has the best value using the same components, except for custom cases.» Login to reply to this |

| Personally, I'm more concerned about the part in the article where the author is describing the company. Why does Tom end up sounding like a PR mouthpiece? How much money did CyberPower pay for this article? Frankly, up until about a year or two ago, I never heard of them. "Cyberpower is an industry leading provider of enthusiast and gaming oriented PC’s." Straight PR garbage. The industry leaders would be Dell, Alienware, Falcon Northwest, and Voodoo PC before they went all artsy fartsy... though the Omen is still one hell of a machine. Hell, even HP's Blackbird 002 (practically built for them by Voodoo) has more polish in its design than the pics of this computer.
I'm not impressed. It looks more like something I would build myself for a lot less money.» Login to reply to this DanTheMathlete (235) Dec 04, 2008 - 07:00 am
| Why does someone post this with every manufacturer build review?
Your ability to build a computer yourself has a value and that is where the extra cost comes from, if you can't build a computer yourself you must pay someone else to do it for you.» Login to reply to this DemBones79 (226) Dec 04, 2008 - 07:23 pm | Edited on Dec 04, 2008 - 07:23 pm
| Go back and re-read what I wrote. I'm not talking about my ability to build a PC for less. Whoopty-freaking-doo. A trained monkey can build a gaming PC.
What differentiates an average customer-built gaming rig from a professional custom-built gaming rig is polish. Custom cases, cable management, ducting and so on are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to an "industry leading" PC.
My point was not that I can build the same for less. It's that I could build the same, period. It's that for the same amount of money, you could get a custom-built rig from one of the *real* industry leaders and get a machine that not only looks better, but has better attention to detail.
If this was a Gateway or a Compaq, sure. Whatever. I'd accept that its innards look like crap. But this thing is being compared to machines like those built by Falcon Northwest. I'm sorry, but there's no contest.» Login to reply to this

| You keep getting hung up on the money issue, man. That's not what I'm talking about. When I say read, I mean all of it. And I'm not talking about cold cathode or blinky lights or any of that garbage either. I'm talking about airflow. I'm talking about cable management. I'm talking about custom parts to aid in achieving the two previous goals. I'm talking about quality of craftsmanship.
For crying out loud, I spelled it out here: "My point was not that I can build the same for less. It's that I could build the same, period."
There are parts of this PC's design that look really clean. And other parts that just look half-assed. If you're going to compare yourself to industry leaders, you can't afford to do anything half-assed.
And actually, if you look at the bulk of my original post, I wasn't even concerned with the money. My main complaint was with the PR mouthpiece soundoff on page 1. If anything, I'd say you're the one concerned about money because that's all your posts on this topic are about:
"Good luck selling it in today's market." "Your ability to build a computer yourself has a value and that is where the extra cost comes from, if you can't build a computer yourself you must pay someone else to do it for you."
Really? You think? Do you think I haven't a clue how valuable my time is? Do you think I haven't considered paying extra to have a PC built for me? I have. And if I'm going to pay someone else to do something for me, they better as hell do a good job of it. My complaint isn't about the money. It's about the craftsmanship. And from what I'm seeing in these pics, I'm just not seeing it. It looks good. But it hardly looks professional. It looks like the same job anyone with half a clue would do.
My point is if I'm going to pay someone else to do work for me, I demand quality.
Oh, and just so you know, smartass, Falcon only offers Core i7 systems with 6 and 12 gigs of RAM. It'd be impossible to build an identical system since they don't believe in skimping. ;)» Login to reply to this |
