» Windows 7 beta hits the web

While the first Windows 7 beta was expected to be released in January, leaked copies of Windows 7 beta 1 have popped up on torrent sites. The OS is expected to be released sometime next year.

The first reviews of beta 1 have popped up as well with WinSuperSite and ZD posting their first impressions of the OS. Paul Thurrott continues to show his concern for the new taskbar in Windows 7 while the ZDNet article has mostly positive impressions of the beta. Thurrott concludes by saying: "At this point in time, Windows 7 is an enigma. Many are excited about testing this next version of Windows, and I'm sure millions of people will do just that when Microsoft makes the Beta available publicly in January. But in use, Windows 7 is fairly unexceptional in the sense that, yes, it has some nice improvements over Windows Vista, but, no, none of them are particularly major changes."

» Vista Beta SP2???
Funny, we're reading about Windows 7 already, but what happened to Vista SP2? I remember the Beta being available, and then NOTHING! Has anyone tried the beta? I tried the beta of SP1 and it royally screwed my system, so I uninstalled and waited for the final release. I decided to NOT try this beta.

Vista SP2 is slated for sometime in Q2 '09. It hasn't changed. It's just a service pack, although it does add some nice new features. Windows 7 is a completely different animal.

Yes, I have installed it on Home Premium x64. No bugs encountered yet, and aero seems even snappier than SP1.

This is not to say some other configurations might not have problems, but I havent had a single one. You will get that annoying "evaluation version" watermark on the desktop unless you do what they recommend in the link.

I cant wait for this to come out and have people say "it's not better than xp" or "it's buggier than vista"

The problem with that is going to turn to support for XP. By the time Windows 7 comes out XP will be mostly used on computers 3-4 years old. Sure you will have the hardware builders who are still on XP but new devices will start to focus on Vista and Windows 7.

Also after 5 years Microsoft can stop most of it's support for XP which should happen durring the life of Windows 7. If they stop doing an aproved driver program I am sure Microsoft could cause enough tech support nightmare of "Yes you want the driver even though it's not digitally signed by Microsoft" that companies stop supporting it.

It really will not fix the problems Vista have. The problem being XP was too good for it's own good. Right now people don't see a reason to switch and instead find hardware problems developers don't see a reason to add backwards support.

The good news though is we are far enough away from XP that we might see only Vista and Windows 7 driver support. Thus forcing an upgrade and the move forward in technology.

We're talking about the same XP that was a huge pile of garbage at launch right? At least, that's what this forum and many, many others said. But I'm not here to beat a dead horse. There is no question that 7 is better than XP. Any software/hardware bought in the last 3 years should work on 7 no problem. Basically, if it works on Vista, it works on 7. But even more than that, it's faster than both XP and Vista. It's also cleaner, a superior interface and lightyears ahead on the security front. I think we can all agree Vista is substantially more secure than XP. 7 is somewhat more secure than Vista but without all the things that upset people. A toned down UAC (by default anyway, you can crank it back up) and the fact that it won't be a system shock to hardware and software vendors. It will benefit from the black eye Vista got for it's strengths.

I want MS to make 7 so when you buy a soundcard you can actually use it to make your music-games sound good. Vista sucks majorly for me because they got rid of software acceleration like eax that made my music sound a ton better than what i got now.

"Yes, it has some nice improvements over Windows Vista, but, no, none of them are particularly major changes."

Which is basically what I've been saying for a while now. If you are holding out for Windows 7, thinking its UI is going to be a big change from Vista's, you're probably going to be disappointed.

The underlying architecture is where most of the changes are this time around. It's like 98 vs 95. The UI is mostly the same, but the innards are worlds apart.

Edit: I'd also like to point out that in Paul Thurrott's review, if you look at the screenshots you'll see that the version number is 7000. That basically confirms what I said way back when: www.firingsquad.com/news/newsarticle.asp?searchid=20924

Close. I personally think the new taskbar is a quite a bit better. There's no question as to speed though, 7 is faster than both Vista and XP. The changes to UAC are nice. There's also improvements in Task Manager, user switching, processor scaling, memory management, superfetch. You name it and it got upgraded. I'm not exactly sure what Paul wants.

And no, it doesn't feel like a Mac. And the jump lists are more intuitive than these guys give credit for. My daughter figured out how to use the Jump List for Internet Explorer already. She turned 3 two weeks ago. I'd say that's fairly intuitive.

Well, I remember 95 sucking and 98 being semi-OK. So I guess that's a positive outlook.
