» Could the weak economy lead to cheaper games?

With economies worldwide in recession and consumers spending less, game publishers may be forced to reconsider their $60 price point for next-gen console games, or at least scale back the length of time games remain at $60. Fortune's Chris Morris cites two releases, Call of Duty: World at War, and Guitar Hero: World Tour, as two examples of recently released games who have already seen their price reduced $10:
Activision-Blizzard made the most notable move right before Christmas, lowering the price of "Call of Duty: World at War" from $59 to $49. While price cuts aren't unheard of during the holidays, the latest "Call of Duty" was a strong seller for the company and the action perked the ears of analysts.

"While the move may be part of an annual promotion, we believe a $10 discount on one of the industry’s top holiday releases highlights the risk of lower software pricing moving into the new year," wrote Colin Sebastian, senior vice president of equity research for Lazard Capital Markets, in a note to investors.

60.00 is too much. I generally will comb sales and wait until the game drops $10 if I can. I know I am more picky then the last generation with what I pay full price for. I easily had double the game library then I do this generation primarily because of game prices now.

My brother recently bought a wii game that was reduced 10 dollars, and the only reason he chose that particular game over others was because of the 10 dollar reduction. Therefore, I believe it would be a positive thing to reduce prices and could actually lead to increased sales.

Definitely it will. Post holiday season games could fly off the shelves with a $10 or $15 reduction.

Now that all three consoles have a decent install mass they could move units with a lower price and probably make up the difference in profit w/ higher volume.

I'ld love it if games here were $50 or even $60. Games sell for around $100 with new games like L4D going for as much as $119.

Damm US dollar pwning the NZ dollar :(

Kind of at least console games have been known to be more. For example The N64 games where normally around $60.

Though I would say if things started to get hard for developers we will see more expansion packs which is more popular for PC games than consoles. With a expansion at least you know you have a market and have a lower developement cost.

The N64 games were an exception. Being cartridge-based, they cost a lot more to make than the CD-ROMs of the Playstation and even the proprietary format of the Dreamcast. Whereas blank optical media is quite cheap (less than $1), Nintendo's cartridges cost a good deal more to make (plastic housing, plus PCB, plus memory chips all add up). Nintendo made just as much on each game sold as Sega and Sony, so it's not like they went all philanthropic on us just because their medium of choice cost more. They just transferred that cost to the consumer instead.

It would be nice for prices to be $50 because at that price I would consider buying a game my friends like that sounds like it might be fun.

I would still buy a game at $60 if it has something cool to me. Like collectors editions as long as it is more than just talking to developers about the game. For example the Blizzard games normally are worth $60-69 for a collectors edition because they go all out for them.
