» AMD's AM3 CPUs: Phenom II X4 810 and Phenom II X3 720 Black Edition

A month after launching Phenom II, today AMD is introducing five new AM3-based Phenom II CPUs. The new processors boast lower price tags and an improved 2.0GHz memory controller. But how do they perform and overclock? Find out in this article!

720 BE ... yoink!

Just too damn tempting a CPU for that cost.

Hurrah for consumers!

As of Feb09, 45nm Phenom has finally hit the big 3.0Ghz (what P4 did in 2002 and Core2 in 2006), and CPU lineup that doesn't embarassingly lose to 2006's Q6600/Q6800.

PhenomII is actually "phenomanly" better than predecessor in power efficiency, and clock scaling.

However, despite low AM3 CPU prices, I can't imagine folks lining up to buy DDR3 and new mobos.

And there's still no real need for triple, much less quad core. Notice how E8400 is at top or near in almost all except Lost Planet.

As anandtech stated, even though binning for triple core, difficult for AMD's huge die to compete with Intel's dual core entry lineup: E2xx, 5xx and E7xx..

And unlike old old Athlon days, more cache or faster memory aint coming to save the day. AMD desperately needs new CPU architecture.

Keep in mind that the 90-nm Athlon X2 6000+ also broke 3.0GHz quite some time ago. The Athlon X2 6400+ was clocked at 3.2GHz...

Preach on brotha.

I just read a review where the author was surprised (!!!) that the 720 OCed to 3.7Ghz outperformed the 810 Oced to 3.3Ghz in a program only designed to take advantage of 2 cores! ... that was the author!

I think most ppl spend lots of money so that their computer specs appear "cool" (whatever that means) to the computer neophyte.

There are no AM3 mobos. So did you want a review of the new chips or not?

The price of the 720 is listed as $145 elsewhere, fyi. Of course it hasn't hit shelves yet so who knows.

No AM3 mobos? The first review I read on these CPU's was done on an AM3 mobo.

There are no AM3 mobos for sale. Check your review, it is either an early AM3 mobo or an Am2+ mobo that is touted as supporting AM3 but, of course, this is nonsense as the chip is backwards compatible. You will be able to tell the difference because a true AM3 mobo will support DDR3.

Nice review, BUT, what's the point of doing a review of a DDR3 capable CPU with DDR2? It would have been better to show how they perform with both types.

As I said in the article, I decided not to include AM3 until the mobos are more mature. An AM3 article will come though once things are fleshed out.

I'm also not really sure if many users would want to pony up the extra dollars for what even AMD admits is a slight upgrade. In order to run at DDR3-1333 speeds you can only use 2 memory modules, DDR3 RAM is more expensive, etc.

Brandon why bother, if they can't read your article, why would they read your post?

Since we don't have AM3 motherboards on the market the point would be kind of moot. Though really I don't think a lot of people might upgrade since it wouldn't take a new motherboard or ram for a lot of AMD users.
