» Windows 7 to include option to disable IE, other features

In a blog posting, Microsoft has announced an updated "Remove Windows Features" that will allow users to 'switch off' certain built-in applications in Windows 7 such as Internet Explorer, Media Player, Media Center, and others.

MS originally toyed with the idea of making the customizations part of installation, but ultimately decided to streamline the process instead, giving users the option to remove features after Windows was up and running. Microsoft lists the following apps that can be turned on/off in addition to those already found in Vista:

  • Windows Media Player
  • Windows Media Center
  • Windows DVD Maker
  • Internet Explorer 8
  • Windows Search
  • Handwriting Recognition (through the Tablet PC Components option)
  • Windows Gadget Platform
  • Fax and Scan
  • XPS Viewer and Services (including the Virtual Print Driver)

I still can't believe that fucking "classic menu" is not going to be an option. WTF? I hate the Xp menu shit! More layers of MS bullshit. Hey Microsoft! How about putting your customer's satisfaction first?

It's still bloated....Bring it down to 128MB of ram usage then we'll talk. It's a fricken OS, I don't care that "ram is cheap" because it's only cheap on new systems. When using very demanding programs and playing games, I want to squeeze every bit out of my system and having a bloated OS is preventing me from doing so. That 512-1Gb of ram could be going towards something useful, instead it is wasted on the OS crap, constantly bugging the CPU, utilizing excess amounts of ram, never shutting up, won't let the processor idle for one second and draining away battery life.

Microsoft's OS' need work, they need to learn to stop adding so much crap code and having it doing bullshit in the background especially when on battery as I seemingly can never get the OS to go into a truly idle state. They also need to cut down on the consumption of system resources. Just because it's there, it doesn't mean you HAVE TO USE IT.

I think allowing a user to "turn off" is the best compromise. There are a lot of 3rd party applications that require and are expecting specific libraries to be on a target machine. IE stuff in particular.

There's a pretty large gap between "remove" and "turn off".
