» TF2 Update Brings Multicore Support

Valve has released an update to Team Fortress 2 that finally enables multicore support to the multiplayer game, although it is still in the testing phase. As Valve is still testing for compatibility, the option is defaulted to off for now but can be turned on via the video options menu. The update also addresses alt-tab and surround sound problems.

Updates to Team Fortress 2 have been released. The updates will be applied automatically when your Steam client is restarted. The specific changes include:

Added Multicore Rendering

  • This initial release is aimed at testing compatibility, so the option is OFF by default
  • To turn it on, go to the Options->Video->Advanced dialog, and check the "Multicore Rendering" option

    Other Changes

  • Several performance improvements to decals and client bone/flex setup
  • A variety of alt-tab and mode switch fixes
  • Improvements to the way the engine initializes surround sound, fixing some specific hardware cases
  • Fixed a crash on exit in Vista 64

in 1920x1200 4xAA, this game runs like total crap with a single core even with a 4870 1gb. unless you have at least 3ghz but people like me with a dual core 2.6ghz will benefit greatly from this once it's properly done.

The game could run fine on even the slowest of computers. Why waste the time doing this?

What is the point? The engine runs pretty fast already so the gain is kind of wasted unless it improves the game in some other way.

I guess the question is if this support is tied with the source engine or a tweak they made on their own? If it was a tweak on their own, it does seem kind of a waste of work. On the other hand, if it was a tweak made to the engine itself and integrating it into TF2 requires little effort and little risk of stability issues, why not?

I do know a few people who would benefit from this in L4D, assumming L4D doesn't already have multi-threaded support.

l4d already has multicore support (i remember some older nvidia drivers causing some problems with it enabled) it apparently makes a difference but i haven't benchmarked it myself

Can't tell you how many people I talked to with that stuttering problem, turn off multicore rendering and problem solved.

I had the same problem with my old 5000+, but with the x3 720 in there, multicore rendering works like a charm and the framerate is really, really sweet.
