» DRM limits Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena to 3 installs

Apparently Atari hasn't learned from EA's DRM fiasco with Spore last year, shipping the PC version of Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena with DRM that limits the number of game activations to just three PCs. The game doesn't ship with a revoke tool to deauthorize machines, so you're basically limited to 3 installs.

As you can imagine, users in the Atari forums are pretty upset over the matter, and already lead one user to setup a blog on blogspot.com concerning DRM in games.

Atari has issued the same blanket statement other publishers have used in the past saying "if you reach the maximum number of installations you can contact the Atari hotline and if it’s a legitimate request you can get a new activation code."

Of course, the problem with these DRM schemes is that they're tied to the hardware in your machine, so if you upgrade too many components at once, or re-install your OS, that counts against your 3 installation limit. At the very least, Atari should've known to provide a revoke tool either online or on the game disc, not to mention the fact that they don't mention the installation limit on the game's packaging.

This is the same Atari that would rather work on releasing a more annoying DRM than releasing a game. They pretty much killed the longevity of Never Winter nights 2, by failing to release a commercial adventure pack that was completed months in advance. This was suppose to be the first of many, but because they felt they needed a stronger DRM scheme, they kept delaying the release, over and over, for almost two years. Any company that values their DRM over their customers and their games deserves to go out of business.

/me digs for his hex editor

Seriously, if they keep on doing this I may very well sit down and learn assembly so I can crack their games just as a way to say "fuck you".

No matter what you do, any DRM you use can be bypassed. Why the hell are you wasting your precious profits on creating software that only succeeds in pissing off your customers?

Damn, that's dash cunning.

I wasn't before...but now I'm even more deeply vexed at my lack of 8 arms. You have ruined my week, good sir!
