» Atari defends lack of multiplayer in Ghostbusters PC

Ghostbusters has launched to pretty positive reviews from the online press so far. Err, let me clarify, the console press. PC gamers are pretty upset over the game's DRM scheme (online activation required) and more importantly, the game's lack of support for multiplayer. The PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game not only support multi, but up to 4-player co-op as well.

Curious as to why the console editions of the game ship with multi support and the PC version doesn't, Big Download contacted Atari and received the following response:

"Multiplayer for the PC version of Ghostbusters is something that Threewave and Terminal Reality always wanted to do. However, our focus was on making the console version the best that they could be - an experience that allows multiple players to re-live and re-fight many of the themes from the movies. When we looked at the resources necessary to pull off multiplayer on the consoles and the PC, it became a question of what could we do and still be excellent in our execution. We couldn't do all versions with multiplayer simultaneously with the resources that we had available - there was simply too much to do."

The one bright side for PC gamers is that the PC version of the title does sell for just $30. That's half off the $60 that the PS3 and Xbox 360 ports sell for.

I cant believe they haven chosen to put multi in a PS3 over a PC. It seems to me there would be more pc video game enthusiasts than there would be PS3. I also thought it was hard to program for the PS3 as well.

I'm also surprised as if they could put multi into the 360 but couldn't do it for the PC?

I thought it was almost cookie cutter to port back and forth?

Smells of supreme laziness + lame excuses.

I think everyone would be better off posting in their forums in a constructive manner, asking for MP. It's not something you can demand, and being a dick about it won't win them over, but if enough loyal Ghostbuster fans ask for it, you gotta imagine that if nothing else, they will feel bad for not putting it in, if not working on a patch for it.

Remember what Atari said...they want this game to succeed and then some, so they can shove the mistake that Activision/Blizzard made back in their faces.

» LAZY
Funny how other games that come out on console AND PC are similar in nature, and all have multiplayer. Guess Atari was just too lazy or too stupid to figure it out.

Good point though about the price difference. I have the option of buying the PC, PS3, or the Xbox360 versions...so I guess it boils down to choice. I like the idea of sacrificing multiplayer and saving $30, since I don't do much multiplayer.

It's so weak. This game is now no more than a rental at best for PC. Remember when things worked the other way around?
