» Activision CEO threatens to pull PS3 support

Activision CEO Bobby Kotick continues his crusade for a PS3 price cut. Citing the weak economy, Kotick has repeatedly called on Sony to cut the price of their latest console in the hopes that a price cut will lead to a surge in game sales.

In his latest rant though the Activision boss has taken things to another level. Speaking with UK publication Times Online Kotick says Activision may stop supporting the PS3 platform if Sony doesn't reduce the PS3's price:

“I'm getting concerned about Sony; the PlayStation 3 is losing a bit of momentum and they don't make it easy for me to support the platform. It's expensive to develop for the console, and the Wii and the Xbox are just selling better. Games generate a better return on invested capital on the Xbox than on the PlayStation.

They have to cut the price, because if they don't, the attach rates [the number of games each console owner buys] are likely to slow. If we are being realistic, we might have to stop supporting Sony.”

When asked for a time frame, Kotick responded: "When we look at 2010 and 2011, we might want to consider if we support the console — and the PSP [portable] too."

Let the market punish vendors (Sony) who don't give the customer (Developers) what they want (easy to develop for platform)?

Watch out! People may accuse you of being a *GASP* Capitalist

Ports are not easy for the PS3 as stated in many interviews. Not sure if Activision will be enough to make the PS3 price drop but if EA gets on the bandwagon Sony is screwed here.

*rolls eyes*

An empty threat hoping it will pressure Sony to drop the ps3 price. They would never actually drop ps3 support.

I would say they might in fact drop support for some games. The PS3 doesn't have amazing sales and any game that doesn't have huge sales is probably not worth the effort to port.

The ps3 has been out for a few years now and Activision has plenty of in-house experience in programming for it. Obviously they aren't going to be doing any ps3 exclusives, but ports are cheap.

You missed the point completely. Basically what he's saying is that the PS3 just isn't as good a platform, profit in mind, for development. That said, why dedicate resources on PS3 development when you can dedicate them to Wii or Xbox 360 development (whether this development is the same game or a completely different project).

The PS3 is plagued by many problems - adoption rate isn't doing so hot, and there are fears that games bought per console will drop, and it costs more to develop for.

The most humorous part of the "the PS3 has been out long enough" argument is that the person making that statement assumes they know more about it than industry experts (game developers who are actually doing the work).

Some architectures simply are more complex to develop for, and the PS3 Cell is one of those architectures.

All businesses are making decision on how and where to cut back. Regardless of what experience they have with the PS3 if it looks like doubling the 360 or Wii team will make them more money they'll do it.
