| | (Post a comment) » Microsoft announces Windows 7 pricingIn his latest Windows 7 team blog post, Microsoft's Brandon LeBlanc discusses pricing for the upcoming OS. First let's briefly discuss the Windows 7 Upgrade program though.
As we've been reporting for the past few weeks, beginning tomorrow, Microsoft will kick off their Windows 7 Upgrade Option program. Starting Friday, anyone who purchases a boxed copy of Windows Vista Home Premium or better (or a PC equipped with Home Premium) from a participating retailer will be able to upgrade to the corresponding version of Windows 7 for free or at very little cost to the user. Microsoft hasn't listed the participating retailers, but historically most of the big names have worked with Microsoft on similar programs. We know Best Buy will be one of the participating retailers. Microsoft also confirmed that Windows 7 Upgrade preorders will be available for 50% off "in select markets" for a limited time beginning tomorrow in the US, Canada, and Japan. As a result, you'll be able to pick up Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade for $49.99, and Windows 7 Professional Upgrade for $99.99. Participating retailers include Best Buy, Amazon, and the online Microsoft store. Microsoft says this is a limited offer that will end on July 11th for the US and Canada, and July 5th for Japan, or "while supplies last". Microsoft didn't mention how many units they plan to offer in each market at this special pre-order price, so if you're tempted, you better move fast. End users in the UK, France, and Germany will be able to pre-order their copy of Windows 7 beginning July 15th and the campaign ends on August 14, or while supplies last.
And now, for the moment we've all been waiting for...Windows 7 pricing. Microsoft has announced the following pricing for the Upgrade editions of Windows 7:
Windows 7 Home Premium (Upgrade): $119.99
Windows 7 Professional (Upgrade): $199.99
Windows 7 Ultimate (Upgrade): $219.99
In comparison to Vista, Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade is priced $10 less, while Windows 7 Ultimate and Professional Edition sell for the same price as their Vista Upgrade equivalents. Keep in mind that at launch Vista Home Premium Upgrade was priced at $159.99, and Ultimate Upgrade at $259.99 (MSFT cut prices in February 2008), so Windows 7 is considerably below that.
The full retail copies will sell for:
Windows 7 Home Premium (Full): $199.99
Windows 7 Professional (Full): $299.99
Windows 7 Ultimate (Full): $319.99
Like the Upgrade edition of Windows 7, the full version of Windows 7 Home Premium sells at a discount compared to Vista. In fact, it's $40 less, as Microsoft officially sells Vista Home Premium for $239.99. Professional and Ultimate pricing carries over unchanged.
Pricing for the OEM editions hasn't been announced. Typically you'll have to wait until launch day to get those prices, and they can vary by retailer. | Previous news article | Back to main news | Next news article |

| | I'm utterly confused by this preorder thing that MS is doing here. The people who are going to upgrade to the o/s immediately (enthusiasts) are the ones who are going to use the preorder thing anyways. I suspect that it's not actually "while supplies last" but more like "until we have enough people to try it and get the word out". » Login to reply to this
