» StarCraft II lacks LAN support

In a wide ranging interview posted on IncGamers, Blizzard's Rob Pardo confirmed that Blizzard has no plans to support StarCraft II gaming over LAN. The game's only multiplayer component will be Blizzard's battle.net service. In a follow-up interview Pardo says that LAN isn't supported "because of the planned technology to be incorporated into Battle.net".

In a surprising move, Pardo also confirmed Blizzard has no plans to port StarCraft II over to consoles:

"In our opinion we just don't feel like we will deliver the type of RTS game that we've been creating [on consoles]."

"We have tried in the past, we actually tried the original StarCraft on Nintendo 64. It works, it's playable, it's just such a different playability gameplay experience than on PC and we really don't want to have it be that different."

Kudos to Blizzard for bucking the trend of porting popular PC franchises to consoles in a quick cash grab. (Spotted on Blues News)

This could be a pain in the butt for the bigger LAN's with 100's to 1,000's of players.

I was thinking the same thing. Convention hall-sized tourneys will have a rough time finding a site that has a net connection powerful enough to handle that many players in addition to the non-gamer related traffic (friends, family, spectators).

WTFOMGBBQ! Need lan!

But I agree, I'm happy that Blizzard is shunning the consoles so we won't end up with some gimped software.

It won't officially support LAN, for about a day when a "special" patch is released to run your own batte.net server. :D

i hope your right because if there is no LAN support i will not 'buy' this game. I never play online i have several PCs set up to play LAN games on rare occasions and if i cant play LAN on this game well thats one less sale (not that it matters i guess to Blizzard but thats my rant)

I'm sure this is exactly this what they're trying to prevent. Your "one copy" for "several PCs" that you "will not 'buy'".

I played lots of StarCraft LAN with my friends years ago. Not one of us had a legit copy.

I don't think online-only MP is a deal breaker for the vast majority of PC gamers these days, with WoW under their belt, Blizzard should know.

I will buy 1 copy if its LAN capable as i am a big fan of the game, but thats all i will pay for because i dont see why we should pay for every computer its installed in, it should be one copy per household and you only need your own copy if you will play online.

It true it will curb Piracy but i dont have to like it hehehhe

What happens when I want to LAN this game at a venue with sub-par internet connection, like basic home DSL? Is it going to work or is everyone going to get the mad lag because they all have to connect through the bnet servers though the same crap connection?

I wouldn't worry about it. I'm sure a basic 1mb connection will hold up to 4 players at a time. Most self respecting gamers that have the ability to grab 5mb connections or above already do. In MI 3mb cable/DSL is the standard. Rarely people get 768k or sub 2mb connections, and we have horrible broadband service here.

The reference to the "planned functionality in battle.net" makes me think it will support local play you'll just have to sign in through battle.net and set the game up there. If it's smart enough to realize everyone is on a LAN than it won't do much with the Blizz servers. I hope anyway.

It still requires every person at the LAN having an internet connection though, and that's getting very unreasonable. It's frustrating to need to be online to do something that shouldn't need the internet. The point of having LANs with friends is that you aren't having to play over the internet, and sometimes the only rooms that accommodate a LAN have no net.
