» Blizzard statement on StarCraft II LAN

Blizzard has issued a statement on StarCraft II's lack of LAN support. Unsurprisingly LAN support was axed in part due to piracy concerns:
We don’t currently plan to support LAN play with StarCraft II, as we are building Battle.net to be the ideal destination for multiplayer gaming with StarCraft II and future Blizzard Entertainment games. While this was a difficult decision for us, we felt that moving away from LAN play and directing players to our upgraded Battle.net service was the best option to ensure a quality multiplayer experience with StarCraft II and safeguard against piracy.

Several Battle.net features like advanced communication options, achievements, stat-tracking, and more, require players to be connected to the service, so we’re encouraging everyone to use Battle.net as much as possible to get the most out of StarCraft II. We’re looking forward to sharing more details about Battle.net and online functionality for StarCraft II in the near future.

Just like with Left 4 Dead 2, the controversy is mostly nonsense over something relatively minor. 90-95% of people bitching (who as it is still make a minor part Blizzard's audience) will still buy the game anyway.

Do most big LAN events even allow net access? I would have thought 100+ gamers couldn't be trusted not to do 'bad things' with a net connection. Seems like a step backwards if you ask me.

So not only do they admit that wow is the reason behind a year delay of sc2, they state that there will be no lan option? Way to piss off your fanbase blizzard (and make all of south korea really mad i assume)

Shit, you're right! If they didn't have a reason to nuke us before, they sure do now! Well I'm thinking of N Korea perhaps but... close enough.

Blizzard stopped catering to mature gamers a long time ago and they're NOT the innovative company we used to know before. I just wonder how long it's going to take for other people to realize that.

I realized it after they released Burning Crusade for World of Warcraft. Charging paying subcribers for content that should've been covered by their subcriptions in the first place. Even worse was the fact that all the textures and gamedata was installed in all vanilla WoW builds via the weekly and monthly updates, basicly requiring all people to have their hard drive filled with extra bloat they can't access without buying the add-on, which is little more than a redeem code.
