» Microsoft aims for Windows 7 RTM this month

Neowin is reporting that Microsoft hopes to hit release to manufacturing status for Windows 7 on July 13th. RTM is the last major milestone in Windows 7's development before the OS is officially released to the public in October.

» Verdict still out on W7
I installed W7 on my wife's Dell laptop this past weekend. Everything went great initially...then after all the updates it went through, the system just became sluggish. I've had the blue screen of death three times, and everything is sssslllloooowwwwww. Does anyone know if there is a way to do a repair install of the RC1, or do I have to reformat and reinstall? If so, I might just go back to Vista and wait for the retail of W7 in October.

You can do a repair but I would do a rollback to before the updates. If you manually installed drivers rather than allow Windows Update to get them for you then it's very likely a driver you loaded installed software that wouldn't have been loaded with the WU version. The WU version is also often older since it's unusual for every driver revision to go through WHQL testing. Most likely that old driver is playing hell on your system.

I don't know of any other issues people had from normal updates. You can boot off the DVD and allow it to run an automated system repair, which will replace all the system files with the default installation version.

» Thanx
Great...thanks. I got home from work last night and found that the CD/DVD drive was gone. W7 wasn't recognizing it anymore. I looked in Device Manager, and it was listed as "unable to start." So I deleted it, rebooted, and W7 tried to install the driver, but failed. Very strange. I attempted this several times, all with the same result. You also can't update the firmware for a drive when the drive isn't recognized in the first place.

I did find potential fixes for this problem when I googled it, so obviously others have experienced similar issues. I will try the rollback before the updates and see what that does. My wife wants WinXP back, and I keep telling her that this is the RC of W7, so it'll have some issues.

My wife wants Vista back but I'll have the RTM version next week. The funny thing is my daughter that's 3 looks at Vista or XP like it's alien.

Get the f***ing mkv files to work on Win 7 media centre with out jumping through hoops

But yeah i am still in the testing phase for Win 7 and im liking it so far. Not completely stable with everything but it runs well enough, and this is even the retail version.

I just want it out since it will force people to upgrade from XP even if it is no better than Vista. The sooner gamers can count on 64-bit computers and at least DX10 graphics the better.

You're nonsensical (again).
XP has a 64bit version.
DX10 is pretty much pointless, all hype no show, the devil was in the details.

I'm not going to move from XP on the machines that have it: there just nothing interesting in Vista/7, and there sure are lots of annoyances (from drivers to sluggishness, like the post-XP "File Open" dialogs... urg I hate those slow things).

As for security, well don't use Outlook or IE and you'll be safer than the lastest Vista/7.

And people wonder why everyone says "But everyone else says vista sucks!" It's by word of mouth of the dumbasses that don't know shit about computers and those that don't know enough to recognize when the people telling them x are just spouting a bunch of bs.

XP 64 bit was failz. If I remember correctly it was built off the server line, which meant a lot of the stuff the average user would want to do they would have to jump through hoops to get done, if they could at all. I definitely didn't miss it when I made the switch to Vista.

As someone who moved to the Win7 RC1 from XP64 I'll say it's for sure an upgrade. Performance is better all around, games, applications, productivity. Like Labo says as well, the driver support for XP64 is horrible, not gamebreaking in my opinion but for example my Zune, a Microsoft product, still has no XP64 driver! I found ways around but it still makes me laugh. It does work well with Win7. Those bastards.

I wish Win7 had the mac OSX preview-all-open-applications shortkey. Otherwise it's really near perfect imo. If anyone knows of a plugin help a brother out..

It's funny that someone would call another "nonsensical" yet spout about details they know nothing about, clearly.

XP 64bit is pretty poor. You cite driver issues as a reason you don't like Vista or 7 yet, especially x64, the driver support is FAR better for either of the newer OSes than it is for XP.

And again, maybe you're too clueless to understand this but we've seen nothing but games that tack on DX10 support as an afterthought. We've seen no games built with DX10 in mind. DX10 is superior but the game has to be coded and optimized for DX10 (or 11).

You're also completely insane if you think that Firefox on Windows XP is more secure than IE8 on Vista or Windows 7. Process seperation combined with user-mode isolation makes IE8 more secure by default. Combine that with the fact that there have been far fewer vulnerabilities for IE in the last 2 years than there have for Firefox guess what you have... a more secure browser, on a more secure OS. Keep telling yourself whatever you want since facts don't seem to be part of your vocabulary.

Why does windows7 force anyone to drop XP, vista did not force anyone. If it's better than XP then people will switch, else we will see the same thing as with vista. TF2/L4D are the only reason I have had use for windows in the past 9 months.
