» Valve working to make Left 4 Dead 2 compatible with L4D1

Speaking with Total Videogames, Valve PR head Doug Lombardi confirmed that they're looking into ways to make Left 4 Dead 2 compatible with the original Left 4 Dead released last year: "That's something that we're trying to work out the details of right now," Lombardi said of the cross-game play feature. "So nothing specific to say today, but we understand that it's a very valid thing to be working on and looking at."

Lombardi also confirmed that L4D mods should be compatible with L4D2 with very little work involved for the mod's developer: "With the MOD stuff, if you're making stuff for Left 4 Dead it will work in Left 4 Dead 2 with very minor amounts of work to bring it over."

It is a good idea all things considered because it means they have to have L4D2 be a good game that people will want to buy. It makes it a sink or swim situation for the title.

Slightly off topic but, L4D II better have a creature that's weapon is fire based. That way they can fuck with the survivor's flame supply yet also risk flame damage to the monster squad.

Yeah...not sure what made it so large, as far as file size goes, that a DLC release wasn't practical, as they previously claimed. A lot of the significant changes are server side, not client side, so the update would be split between client Xbox consoles and their dedicated servers at Valve.

Not sure why the disk-space requirement would have anything at all to do with whether or not it was DLC. Valve offers everything for download over steam, including the 20gig monster that is Sacred2.

Yeah, that comment they made seems more aimed at the console market, not the PC market.

This is a double edged sword, if they can do it it would not split the community up as much, but at the same time it would make them look like they where exaggerating the huge leap that L4D2 is supposedly over L4D and maybe they could have made it into a DLC or a Expansion pack for L4D.

Yeah, smells of 'fig leaf' to the angered mob that is L4D players w/o coming out and admitting they made a mistake.

...at least it is SOMETHING though...
