» Microsoft releases Windows XP Mode Release Candidate

With Windows 7 out of the way, Microsoft has just released Windows XP Mode RC. If you recall, Windows XP Mode utilizes your CPU's virtualization capabilities to run Windows XP from within your Windows 7 desktop. It's basically Microsoft's way of providing compatibility for those old WinXP apps that may not work well under Windows 7. Note: your CPU must support hardware virtualization and it must be enabled within your motherboard's BIOS. Microsoft also says that Windows XP Mode requires RC or RTM builds of Windows 7 Professional, Ultimate or Enterprise and an additional 1 GB of RAM, 15 GB of available disk space. Here's a list of the new features that have been added since the beta:

Based on feedback from the Windows XP Mode beta, we’ve made several improvements to the usability of Windows XP Mode for small and medium-sized business users:

  • You can now attach USB devices to Windows XP Mode applications directly from the Windows 7 task-bar. This means your USB devices, such as printers and flash drives, are available to applications running in Windows XP Mode, without the need to go into full screen mode.
  • You can now access Windows XP Mode applications with a “jump-list”. Right click on the Windows XP Mode applications from the Windows 7 task bar to select and open most recently used files.
  • You now have the flexibility of customizing where Windows XP Mode differencing disk files are stored.
  • You can now disable drive sharing between Windows XP Mode and Windows 7 if you do not need that feature.
  • The initial setup now includes a new user tutorial about how to use Windows XP Mode.

    » Looking back...
In the days of 98 it was hard choice to upgrade to the new - Was it "Me" or some crap? Finally XP came about about with some neat features (error reporting for instance) and finally, upgrading seemed like a good idea. Why Vista? DX10 maybe? It's a strong pull, but I still remain on the fence. Hmmm... W7 XP Mode? All my old XP junk will still work? I might buy that.

Really though, XP mode boiled down is VM technology streamlined in the OS.

Kind of stupid to add support for an OS that last was bundled 4 years ago. It would have been great for Vista but why allow people to go back now? Sure I bet it would be nice for the office that doesn't want to upgrade software but should Microsoft really support the people who don't want to use new software ever few years? It is better for these people to get new versions.

That was extremely stupid. Which has the largest user base? Vista or XP? Which supports the most software and hardware? Which is superior? Which is the most loved of the two? If you answered Vista to any of these you're an idiot. Microsoft realizes that they can convince the people that are holding out on upgrading by offering them something to fall back on without having to dual-boot their systems. It's a brilliant decision and makes me love 7 even more.

Really? I thought your post was the stupid of the two. My point is they only have to have this mode to support the software that doesn't run on Windows 7 or Vista. I said that would be good for Vista but now it is people holding onto software that is pretty old. My point is if your holding onto that 2004 version of Quickbooks it might be time to upgrade since if you bought a software title in the last three years it should run on Windows 7.

Which is superior? Vista was on many levels. It had issues, but it was a drastic overhaul to fix flaws in XP and older, but overall it was an improvement. To say otherwise is to be a sheep to Apple's marketing and the opinions of the ill-informed.
