» Microsoft phasing out Xbox 360 Pro

It appears Ars Technica's mole was correct once again. A Gamestop employee snapped a picture of the new Xbox 360 Arcade boxes and sent it in to Kotaku. The new Arcade boxes no longer mention the Xbox 360 Pro SKU, just the Arcade and the Elite.

If you recall, Ars Technica's mole said that Microsoft plans to phase out the Pro in favor of the Elite, with an Elite price cut occurring in early Sept.

If the new boxes Microsoft is shipping to retailers no longer mention the Pro SKU, you can assume the Elite price cut should be following shortly. As a result, you might want to think twice before going Pro.

They should phase out the crapbox completly. It was out of date over a year ago. My high end PC eats it for breakfast and spits it out. As well as my PS3.

Pathetic trolling aside, the games on the 360 look and play just fine, so I fail to see what the hell does having a supercomputer has to do with anything if there's no games to take advantage of all the power.

This might be the thing that pushes me over the edge and gets me to buy a 360.

I guess its true that M$oft's proprietary HD is a big driver in cost.

Otherwise why not kill the useless version (Arcade) instead?

The Arcade sales and really isn't too bad of a value since you can always buy the hard drive later. You could even say that right now the arcade is a better value for people who have no need to play Xbox games since the hard drive is only $30 more vs. the Pro and twice as big. You would also need the HDMI cable which the pro doesn't have so the only real thing you lose is the headset.

Contrary to what most people online think, the majority of people buying these STILL don't care about HDMI. They would rather have the headset over the HDMI cable. Hell, I mean out of a quick 20 people I personally know off the top of my head that have a 360 and/or a PS3 don't use HDMI. Hell, most of those don't even use the Component cables. LoL

Because it makes them more money to sell an arcade at 199 and an elite at 299 then to sell a pro at 199 and an elite at 299.

It would be nice to see a price cut for the Xbox 360 though I also hope it means we see the PS3 also lower it's price as well.
