| | (Post a comment) » PS3 Slim lacks Linux support, PS2 backward-compatibilityKotaku reports that Sony's PS3 Slim no longer offers official Linux support, or support for any other OS for that matter. One of the neat features of older PS3 consoles was that you could install Linux distros like Yellow Dog Linux on the system hard drive, allowing you to essentially convert your PS3 game console into a mini computer. Simply launch the XMB and select "Other OS".
With the Slim this feature is apparently removed.
The Slim also lacks support for PS2 games. Sony says the PS3 library has matured to the point where consumers no longer need PS2 backward compatibility, instead they're purchasing the console to play PS3 titles: "there are so many PS3 disc-based games that are available that we think — and noticed this from our research — that most consumers that are purchasing the PS3 cite PS3 games as a primary [reason]".
"And it's not just like 50 or 60 percent. It's well into the 80 or 90 percentile range who are purchasing it for PS3 [games]. We do know that there are next gen consumers wanting to come over the the PS3. Most of those are consumers who have not utilized their PS2 for a little while and they're ready to jump into the PlayStation 3." | Previous news article | Back to main news | Next news article |

| » unbelievable... I just can't believe this... The Playstation 3 is initially released with both full Playstation2 support and linux support. And now look at it! It has neither PS2 support or linux support! What the heck man?! every time they 'upgrade' it they really just remove something. Are you telling me people actually buy into this?! I have had an xbox360 for a year or two now, and I have been generally disappointed with it (no built in wifi, no free internet, overheating issues, games lock up) so I was thinking about buying a PS3, mainly so I can watch my matroska mkv files though a linux setup, on the tv without having to convert everything, play my PS2 games and maybe watch a blu-ray movie every now and then. But NOOO can't do THAT can we? Could like 3 years ago but not now... And for all you slaves saying just buy a PS2, are you serious?! It is something the damn thing ALREADY HAD, and they REMOVED IT. It's not like it would take a technical mastermind to implement. Do you want to clog up your space by having TWO consoles instead of just one? I guess I either have to search for an OLDER PS3 or look for something else entirely, seeing as how I was also disappointed with the psp (I'm not even going into THAT), I may never buy a PS3 now...» Login to reply to this slim21st (1) Dec 28, 2009 - 02:40 pm
| » ignorant ppl... What I don't get is why most (not all) people don't research before opening their mouths. They complain about things that have already been answered and discussed. It really takes time for those trying to move forward and make due with what's left.
Sony was and has been spending well over $800 to make the damned thing. Yet they have been selling it for alot less than what they spend to make it. So why is it a crime that they want to move forward and concentrate on the PS3 rather than spend money and time making it PS2 compatible? It's just dumb. So before you go and open your mouth, please come back with the data of how much Sony has been spending to make the PS3 game experience as well as HDMI-CEC compared to the selling price.» Login to reply to this |

| | Eh, yeah I'd like to see BC too and they could probably implement it fairly easily, but isn't this making mountains out of molehills? I mean, from my own experience I believe the 80-90 percent number. It'd be nice icing on the cake but that's all it would be. » Login to reply to this |
