» NVIDIA to drop GTX, GTS, GT, G suffix from GPU names

For a year now NVIDIA's been refining their naming scheme for their latest GPUs. While NVIDIA originally planned to designate their highest performance parts with the GTX suffix followed by the model number (i.e. GeForce GTX 295, GeForce GTX 285, etc), performance parts as GTS followed by the model number (GeForce GTS 250), and mainstream and value GPUs as GT and G followed by the model number (GeForce GT 220, GeForce G210), now DigiTimes says that NVIDIA has nixed those plans and is dropping the suffix entirely.

Beginning with their 40-nm GeForce 210 card, NVIDIA will rely solely on the model number to designate performance. As such, NVIDIA's flagship DX11 offering will presumably be designated as GeForce 300.

DigiTimes expects the chip to debut in Q4'09

They will do exactly what AMD has done for last couple years.

HD4850, HD4870, HD4890

8800GT, 8800GTX, 9800GTX+

now become something like
8840, 8850, 8890

You are a costumer that doesn't know much about video cards, what would you rather buy? 8800GTX? 8800GTS? 8800GT? whos better?
If you had the 8800, the 8850 and the 8900 then it would have been much easier.

Way to contradict yourself Drkeo, the fact he knows the diffrence between a 8800Gtx or Gts means he knows what he is looking for. That makes him a knowledgable customer. Some one like you who can't take the time to goto nvidias website to know the difference is not. The main confusion with nvidia rehashing old cards with new names like the 9800gtx gtx+ Ect. Yes terrak I'm actually sticking up for you cause you seemed to be lacking the gusto here you have in our arguments.

Everyone here is a hard core gamer the fact he calls me out that i dont know the difference is comical. I build my own PCs. I never had a problem with Nvidias naming system and its an opinion, although simplifying it is a step in the right direction.

Hey FSgeek i know we dont see eye to eye sometimes (well only on Wii subjects heheh) but doesnt mean we dont agree on things either. Theres no hate i just like to argue sometimes, and you always strong opposition, its fun no malice intended. I respect all people that post on this site.

yes i understand how it confuses things for the average consumer, however i said I had no problem with it. BTW i have a 8800gtx on the wifes PC i like how it makes it sound more powerful (like Samuel said). DOesnt concern me either way, i know what i am getting when i buy a Graphics card

They should just drop the GeForce name. It's been around far to long.

Yeah... why should they drop the number one brand name that most people can identify? It'd cause more confusion than the whole GTX, GTS, GT mess.
