» MechWarrior legal trouble

As IGN reports, Piranha Games and Smith and Tinker's recently announced MechWarrior project could be facing legal trouble. IGN received a cease and desist letter from Harmony Gold asking them to pull down the MechWarrior trailer that debuted back in July.

Harmony Gold, which owns the rights to the Macross/Robotech universe in the US, feels that at least one of the mechs that appears in the trailer could be a copy of one of their units. Apparently this has been an issue in the past, with Harmony Gold taking FASA to court back in 1996. The two sides ultimately settled that dispute, although now it appears a legal battle may be brewing again. (Spotted on Blues News)

This is so stupid... Battletech should have the rights to use these designs in the US since they paid for them. In Japan I agree it should be a different story, where Robotech/Macross/"other titles to long to name" should have exclusive rights.

Not that I miss the rifleman, but the Marauder is one of my favouirte mechs and the Warhammer is an all around useful addition to any lance when playing pre-munchkin battletech (omni-mechs/XL/double heatsink/Ferro-Fibrous crap).

Yeah i was a big fan of the Robotech designs in the Battletech Universe and had to spend big bucks on ebay to get some of the rare Miniatures like Warhammer, archer, Battlemaster MAC2 Destroid, Rifleman and the Marauder and the LAMs. All rare. I actually thought the table top game was way to cumbersome compared to games like Warhammer 40k so i redesigned the whole game so it didnt require the ridiculous amounts of paperwork necessary to play the game (simplified it so that can use more units in a game aswell as speed things up). I actually thought the idea that armour sheers off when hit as silly, as the idea of 100 machineguns tearing up a mech to pieces hilarious (would never happen to a tank so why would it work on a mech?)In real life this just doesnt happen. Anyway that was the biggest flaw in the table top game (in my opinion).

Big fan of the universe and hope that the PC games for this will be arriving soon, and this doesnt cause any unnecessary delays

Sweet, I think my friends and I took the opposite direction. We converted the tactical games we were playing at the time to work more like Star Fleet Battle's impulse system. Games included Batteltech, Renegade Legion(Centurion, Interceptor, Leviathan) and Military Madness on the TG-16 into a turn based pen and paper version.

Also, we hated Solaris 7, so we didn't play that. :)

It's good to know we were not the only uber-nerds on the planet. (As in not only did we play tactical board games, but we modified them to suit our liking) :D

Nah your not the only one hehehhe, once its all painted it looks fantastic. Thats part of the enjoyment of the hobby you get some personal satisfaction from it. Lucky the wife doesnt mind me having this hobby.

I modified the game so we can include more Mechs/Units in the Battle. I mean in the standard game you had one sheet per mech, and we found in our games that this limited the amount of units we can field, so in the interest of making larger battles i felt it had to be simplified alot. Ended up fitting enough information to fit 3 mechs. Thus a Lance on one page. Made it alot easier without deviating from Battletech Universe. Had to revamp the weapons system, and ditched the cumbersome ammo system and used a Ammo roll ala Necromunda. Anyway the system allowed 3x more units to be used then the old game and sped things up dramatically while maintaining the Battletech feel.

Great fun and like i said am eagerly awaiting the next Mechwarrior/Mechcommander series on PC.

» I love both
And Macross is a copy of Forever War which is a copy of Starship Troopers. Robert Heinlien started the whole mecha thing so everyone sit down shut up and do not take credit for things you never came up with!

Screw Harmony Gold right in their necks. They all deserve a taint punch for potentially slowing down the progress of the next MW game.
