» The RV870 rumor fest continues

Fudo has posted no fewer than four different RV870 stories on Fudzilla this morning. According to his sources, RV870 cards will be broken up into multiple price segments, with high-end Radeon HD 5870 2GB cards selling for $449, while a 1GB SKU will carry an MSRP of $399. Fudo believes the card will come with 1600 shaders clocked at 825MHz, which will run alongside 1300MHz GDDR5 memory. Expreview has snagged shots of the card (courtesy of Tweakers) from multiple angles. It's basically the same card Chiphell posted photos of last month, minus the annoying watermark of course.

Fudzilla's also posted more info on the 5850. The site claims the card will ship with 1440 shaders (2 SIMD units disabled) clocked at 725MHz, and 1GHz GDDR5 memory. They believe the card will sell for $299.

Fudzilla says the cards will launch on Sept 22nd in the US, and the 23rd for gamers in Europe. A 5870 X2 card should arrive a month later.

I've seen this symptoms over and over..
Diagnosis - "future-proofing"

You're SUPPOSED to:
1. Anxiously wait for some games.
2. Take home and try and find some frozen levels and alien ship fps to be too low.
3. Go look online for gfx card reviews with this game.
4. Buy new CPU, RAM and/or faster video card.

Consoles are rapture. You never go through this mess... boring huh? All that time just playing games without a care in the world.

Everybody is forgeting the most important thing -

where are the must-have DX11 games!?

Situation is a lot worse than with DX10 introduction. "New" DX11 features like Tessellation and Compute Shader have already been around for many years (just not incorporated into DX). So feature wise, basically DX10.5

So virtually, anybody who's a gamer already has at least an 8800GT, and many with HD4870/GTX260 or higher. What incentive do you have to upgrade (no word yet on how PhysX will be handled)? H264/Bluray acceleration?

Oh right, ofcourse.. Crysis - the 2 year old game that couldn't be tamed. Folks are cash straped - I seriously hope the $449 is a bad joke.

The card is priced where it is for those who have to have new tech as soon as it comes out. It will come down for the rest of us before long.

I just don't understand the anger at a company using the fact they are first to market with a product charging more. ESPECIALLY when, as you say, there aren't even any "must have" games yet and won't be until the price is more reasonable. So why the crying? Unless you do care and are upset you can't rush out and buy the latest tech when you don't really need it right away...

I picked up a 4870 on the cheap to get me by. I'll pass that along to my wife's computer when the 5870 is in the $200ish range.

The Tflops of course. We should all be learning quantum physics and writing parallel math apps while we await the DX11 games.

I will pick up a 1gb 5870 because I can. Paying 100 grand for a 2010 corvette is dumb too but I would still do it if I had the means. If you have to have the latest and greatest like me you have to pay for it.

Rumours persist that this card is going to have a high initial price so I really have to stop giving a damn.

1) Who do they think they are? Nvidia? How many fo you have bought an ATI card only to have it drop 50% in price 3 months later? This is why people hate ATI and Nvidia has more awesome fanboys.

2) How long will a PS3 last you? How long will the same amount of money spent on a 5850 last you? Probably not 1/2 as long.

Paying $300+ for a video card is dumb.

I don't know what you've been smoking, but most of my geeky friends have made the switch to ATI/AMD. Excessive driver issues for nVidia and the OCing power of the ATIs have won many hearts and minds.

I do agree, however, that paying $300 for a graphics card is stupid. The next generation of graphics cards is going to bring forth some CPU bottlenecking.

Easy, I haven't been excited about a video card inawhile... but $299 for a mainstream nextgen card is F'ing retarded, so I am trying to get un-excited. :)

While the ATI line of video cards have done very well (I personally use a Palit 4870 1GB), their CPU sales would suggest that most people recognise the superior Intel price/performance ratios.

Saying a PS3 is a better value to a gamer isn't taking into account the graphics quality you get out of the video card and I would be suprised if someone can't go a couple years with both a video card and a PS3

It is also worth pointing out that Diablo 3 and Starcraft two is only coming out for one of these setups.

Paying > $150 twice in 2 years is smarter.

eg: Right now you should
1) Buy a PS3 now that is is $299 and tell your girlfriend it is the best Bluray player for the price.

2) In a year buy a 5850 for $100 instead of $300, and stick with this cycle.

When people stop buying cards when they are overpriced, companies will stop trying to overprice them.

The performance of the card and its cost to the end user are the only 2 metrics on which fanboyism is based. The difference between AMD and Nvidia is Nvidia is much more successful with their marketing. Is Nvidia a better buy because their cards don't drop in price as quickly as AMD cards? No. The card with the better performance per dollar spend is the better card, so why do you care if a fast card becomes cheap? Just wait it out.

I disagree on a psychological basis... fanboys have low self-esteem because they measure their worth in hardware.

When ATI rapidly drops their prices, the ATI fanboy needs to justify his purchase somehow rather than accept the fact that this is routine and he should have known better. So they venemously attack nVidia.

The second time this happens they turn on ATI and join the green side, as it is less of a blow to their self-esteem sticking with Nvidia's high prices.

You're talking about ATI slashing prices yet fail to mention the fact that nvidio dropped prices of the GTX cards massively when the 4000 series launched. Less than 2 weeks after nvidia's cards came out over $100 was dropped off the price on almost the entire lineup. The same thing will happen again.

Blaming any company for using the fact that they are first to market to increase margins and profitability is silly. That's how the real world works. It's the same reason the new, hottest car can usually get more than MSRP. Because demand outweighs supply. A company that doesn't exploit this fact will be a failure.
